Cloud theory and social capital: Understanding Druze influence in the Middle East
The ‘preservation of the brethren’ principle among Druze Intergenerational Groups in Israel
This article examined whether Israel’s Druze society has fundamentally changed, as the literature on intergenerational conflicts suggests. Specifically, it explored the association between people’s attitudes towards the principle of ‘preservation of the brethren’ (Hifz al-Ikhwan) and (1) intergenerational groups and (2) community characteristics – an under-researched topic reflecting social solidarity. To this end, it constructed a new questionna…

I versus We: Collective and Individual Factors of Reserve Service Motivation during War and Peace
This study examines conditions of peace and war to find whether the 'rally 'round the flag' effect is indeed attributed to rising levels of social collectivism. Reserve service motivation in peacetime and wartime was compared among 1,004 Israeli reservists. Levels of motivation and the factors that affect them were examined during the optimism of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process (February 2000) and about a year and a half into the second Int…
Under the Threat of Terrorism: A Reassessment of the Factors Influencing the Motivation to Serve in the Israeli Reserves
Discussion of the various aspects of relations between the military and society in Israel has been widespread in social and political science research for many years. The changing character of these relations and, in particular, the weakening of the nation’s army reserve, has attracted special attention recently. The developments of the last twenty years have raised a number of questions, among them vital issues at the heart of Israel’s national …

Israel's National Security Doctrine under Strain: The Crisis of the Reserve Army
Israel's national security doctrine necessitates a citizen's army ('nation-in-arms') based on universal conscription, requiring citizens to serve in the military reserves for many years. This reserve army is the mainstay of Israel's military. The willingness of citizens to serve in the army is analyzed here, using four approaches: the individual level, the institutional or organizational levels, competing commitments, and social conditions. This …

The uniqueness of Islamic fundamentalism
This article explores the notion of fundamentalism, and anchors it in the concepts of extremism, radicalism and scripturalism. It argues that it is possible to study the phenomenon of fundamentalism within the paradigms of rationalism that prevail in modern social science. Furthermore, while all fundamentalist movements share certain characteristics, Islamic fundamentalism differs from other fundamentalist movements in many substantial ways, incl…
Conflict Management in the Middle East
Political Culture Approach to Middle East Politics
Ten years ago dissatisfaction with the state of studying Middle East politics may well have led one to believe that to a very large extent, the shortage of scholars qualified in the esoteric languages, elaborate traditions, and long history of the area was to blame. In fact, at the time there was a good deal of justification to speak of an expected shortage of experts in Middle Eastern studies, to the point where importing such scholars from abro…

Civilianization of Military Regimes in the Arab World
Institutionalization and Political Development: A Conceptual and Theoretical Analysis
In recent years, institutionalization has become one of the key concepts in comparative politics in general, and in the study of political development in particular. This elegant and almost geometrically tidy theory of political order best articulated by Huntington has been acclaimed as a major new school, one that will be able perhaps to narrow what La Palombara called the 'widening chasm' between 'macrotheories and microapplications in comparat…
