  • Oedipus and the cabal: Conspiracy theories and the decline of symbolic efficiency

    Open Access•Brian Hughes•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Communication•2024

Conspiracy theories are a means by which people make sense of vastly complex webs of cause and effect, contingency, and random chance. Impersonal operations of a political economy thus become personified in the figure of sinister puppet masters controlling the world. Overdetermined historical events become narrativized as plots executed with clockwork timing and perfect secrecy. This study proposes a model for the motives and mechanisms by which …

  • The Southern Irish Loyalists Relief Association and Irish Ex-Servicemen of the First World War, 1922–1932

    Open Access•Brian Hughes, Brian W Hughes•ARTICLE•War & Society•2023

In 1925, the Southern Irish Loyalists Relief Association (SILRA), originally founded for the relief of southern Irish loyalist refugees in Britain, created a fund for ex-servicemen resident in the Irish Free State (IFS). Populated primarily from among the ‘diehard’ right of the British Conservative Party, SILRA’s charitable work was inevitably influenced by the world view of its membership and their audience. But it also had a Dublin sub-committe…

  • Chaplaincy in the outpatient setting-getting from here to there

George Handzo, Brian Hughes et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Care Chaplaincy•2022

One of the most evident trends in US health care and health care generally in the developed world is that more and more care is shifting to outpatient settings. This change opens up substantial opportunities, and in many cases, expectations for chaplains to extend the breadth of the care they provide in any health system. However, it also brings many challenges. This paper describes the journey of four very different inpatient chaplaincy services…

  • The Everything Cult: Multiphrenic Faith and the QAnon Movement

Brian Hughes•ARTICLE•Journal of Religion Media and…•2022

This article undertakes an analysis of QAnon marketing and metaphysics through a holistic lens of mediatization theory and medium theory. It proposes a means of understanding the movement as an example of mediatization in the sense of a social environment in which behavior comes to resemble the logic of the media, and mediatization in the sense of an institution—that is, the Q movement as a media entity operating as a social agent in the world at…

  • Engagement in subversive online activity predicts susceptibility to persuasion by far-right extremist propaganda

    Open Access•Kurt Braddock, Brian Hughes et al.•ARTICLE•New Media & Society•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 11

Despite the widespread assumption that online misbehavior affects outcomes related to political extremism, few studies have provided empirical evidence to this effect. To redress this gap, we performed two studies in which we explored the relationship between subversive online activities and susceptibility to persuasion by far-right extremist propaganda. Study 1 ( N = 404) demonstrates that when individuals are exposed to far-right “scientific ra…

Brian Hughes, Dave Jones et al.•ARTICLE•Terrorism and Political Violence•2022•Cited by: 9

With Patrick Crusuis’ 2019 attack that killed twenty-two people in El Paso, Texas, discussions of ecofascism were thrust into mainstream news outlets and magazines. In his manifesto, Crusius described himself as an “ecofascist” seeking to challenge the “environmental warfare” of immigration. His choice of target, a Walmart frequented by Mexican immigrants, reflects this ideological connection between ecological priorities and violent white suprem…

  • Development of a Codebook of Online Anti-Vaccination Rhetoric to Manage Covid-19 Vaccine Misinformation

    Open Access•Brian Hughes, Cynthia Miller-Idri et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Vaccine hesitancy (delay in obtaining a vaccine, despite availability) represents a significant hurdle to managing the COVID-19 pandemic. Vaccine hesitancy is in part related to the prevalence of anti-vaccine misinformation and disinformation, which are spread through social media and user-generated content platforms. This study uses qualitative coding methodology to identify salient narratives and rhetorical styles common to anti-vaccine and COV…

  • Cultural Variance in Reception and Interpretation of Social Media Covid-19 Disinformation in French-Speaking Regions

Open Access•Brian Hughes, Kesa White et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Digital communication technology has created a world in which media are capable of crossing national boundaries as never before. As a result, language is increasingly the salient category determining individuals' media consumption. Today, a single social media post can travel around the world, reaching anyone who speaks its language. This poses significant challenges to combatting the spread of disinformation, as an ever-growing pool of disinform…

  • ‘Make the terror behind greater than the terror in front’? Internal discipline, forced participation, and the I.R.A., 1919–21

    Open Access•Brian Hughes, Brian W Hughes•ARTICLE•Irish Historical Studies•2018

This article will explore two relatively neglected features of the Irish Republican Army’s (I.R.A.) guerrilla war between 1919 and 1921: internal discipline and forced participation. The gravest disciplinary measure was the death penalty and I.R.A. orders directed that it should apply to members guilty of certain offences against the army. While British army and police officials often insisted that the I.R.A. executed its own without scruple, the…

  • Defying the IRA

    Open Access•Brian M Hughes, Brian Hughes•BOOK•Defying the IRA?•2017

This book examines the grass-roots relationship between the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and the civilian population during the Irish Revolution. It is primarily concerned with the attempts of the militant revolutionaries to discourage, stifle, and punish dissent among the local populations in which they operated, and the actions or inactions by which dissent was expressed or implied. Focusing on the period of guerilla war against British rule fro…

By the time it had ceased its work, the committee had dealt with over 4,000 applications and recommended 2,237 ex-gratia grants. • Lyric compression in the stories of Katherine Mansfield

    Open Access•Brian Hughes, Brian L Hughes•ARTICLE•Revista Alicantina de Estudios…•1988

This paper begins by stressing the need for a more critical approach to the work of Katherine Mansfield, accounts of which tend often to rely on purely biographical material. After discussing the relative failure of In a German Pension, which is attributed to a want of focus in the narrative point of view, the essay goes on to suggest that, in the later work, the twin techniques of highlighting and epiphany (the privileging of certain lyrical mom…
