Anything of Note: Recovering "Lost Life" in the Psychoanalytic Archive
This essay engages with the hitherto embargoed letters, drawings and case notes of Stella Coomber ("Susan"), the subject of Marion Milner's case history The Hands of the Living God . Using these documents as a starting point, I decode the identities of medical staff, institutions, and contacts whose names are disguised in Milner's book, and reconstruct some of Stella's life behind the scenes of, and after, Hands . The letters disclose her project…
Pitcairn's 'guilty stock'
Pitcairn Island is repeatedly figured as a successful experiment in cross-breeding, where the best characteristics of the Polynesian and English races have felicitously united. The Pitcairn &s;colony&s; emerges in accounts such as Sir John Barrow&s;s as a kind of selective breeding farm, again ideally constituted by its island geography for the introduction and isolation of strands of stock. Fletcher Christian anticipated that Pitcairn&s;s island…

Intimate Strangers: Friendship, Exchange and Pacific Encounters
When Louis Antoine de Bougainville reached Tahiti in 1768, he was struck by the way in which 'All these people came crying out tayo, which means friend, and gave a thousand signs of friendship; they all asked nails and ear-rings of us.' Reading the archive of early contact in Oceania against European traditions of thinking about intimacy and exchange, Vanessa Smith illuminates the traditions and desires that led Bougainville and other European vo…
Stereotype content model across cultures: Towards universal similarities and some differences
The stereotype content model (SCM) proposes potentially universal principles of societal stereotypes and their relation to social structure. Here, the SCM reveals theoretically grounded, cross-cultural, cross-groups similarities and one difference across 10 non-US nations. Seven European (individualist) and three East Asian (collectivist) nations (N=1,028) support three hypothesized cross-cultural similarities: (a) perceived warmth and competence…

The Value of Remanufactured Engines: Life‐Cycle Environmental and Economic Perspectives
Remanufacturing restores used automotive engines to like‐new condition, providing engines that are functionally equivalent to a new engine at much lower environmental and economic costs than the manufacture of a new engine. A life‐cycle assessment (LCA) model was developed to investigate the energy savings and pollution prevention that are achieved in the United States through remanufacturing a midsized automotive gasoline engine compared to an o…
