  • Chinese modernist satire

    Yuexi Liu•ARTICLE•Textual Practice•2024

Bringing into dialogue modern Chinese literary studies and modernist studies, this essay examines what I call the Chinese modernist satires of Lao She, Qian Zhongshu, and Eileen Chang. Chinese modernism is here understood as plural in itself, encompassing multiple origins, times, influences, politics, and loci. Viewed as part of a global/planetary modernism, early-twentieth-century Chinese modernism was neither imported nor belated. Like the Angl…

  • Narrating Difficult Histories

    Yuexi Liu•ARTICLE•English Studies•2022•References: 3

The interwar border crossings in Vile Bodies (1930) and Down There on a Visit (1962) reveal difficult and often lost histories of violations of freedom of expression and persecutions of sexual minorities. Drawing on archival material, including literary manuscripts and historical British Government records, to shed new light on the two novels, this essay demonstrates how border controls in Europe attracted urgent attention in the shadow of war an…

  • Hearing Voices

    Open Access•Yuexi Liu•ARTICLE•Modernist Cultures•2020

Waugh's last comic novel The Ordeal of Gilbert Pinfold (1957) takes ‘exterior modernism’ to a new height, no longer avoiding interiority – as in his interwar fiction – but exteriorising the interior through dissociation. ‘The Box’, to which the writer-protagonist attributes the source of the tormenting voices, may well be his own mind, an extended – albeit unhealthy – mind that works as a radio: he transmits his thoughts and then receives them as…

  • Finding a Voice through Cinema

    Yuexi Liu•ARTICLE•English Studies•2017

Woolf’s Jacob’s Room and Waugh’s “The Balance” represent two different versions of modernism and challenge the perception of interior modernism as the dominant form of modernism. Both authors departed from Stern’s middle-distance realism in seeking their distinctive voices: Woolf in close-up, in an emphasis on interior modernism; Waugh in long shot, which I consider as “exterior modernism”. Interestingly, the intersection of these two in the earl…
