  • What can the romantic lyric do

    Open Access•Madeleine Callaghan•ARTICLE•Textual Practice•2023

The Romantic fascination with lyric is only matched by the poets’ relentless drive to experiment with and individualise the genre. Lyric’s limits test the creative and critical intelligence of the Romantic poet who asks what poetry can know and how it can know it, and what lyric can do and how it can do it. This article considers the ways in which each poet asks the question of what can lyric do and show how they react with and against a genre th…

  • ‘I ne’er mistake you for a personal foe’

    Open Access•Madeleine Callaghan•CHAPTER•Byron among the English Poets•2021

The polarisation of Byron and Wordsworth takes on a cartoonish tinge in the light of their poetic enmity. Byron’s bombastic lines, ‘Thou shalt believe in Milton, Dryden, Pope; / Thou shalt not set up Wordsworth, Coleridge, Southey’, claim to reject Wordsworth’s circle in favour of an earlier triumvirate. 1 Readers are, only half-mockingly, asked to choose between one school and another. This stark choice often sets the tone for critical debates. …

  • Byron and His Twentieth-Century Poetic Legacy

    Open Access•Madeleine Callaghan•ARTICLE•The Review of English Studies•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Throughout the twentieth century, Byron offers expressive opportunities for new generations of poets. However, critics have rarely chosen to explore the contours and content of this influence. This article understands Byron’s influence not as subconscious but as deliberately fashioned by his inheritors, where W. B. Yeats, W. H. Auden, and John Berryman choose the way in which Byron functions as a model in their poetry. Byron is neither forbidding…

  • The artifice of eternity”

    Madeleine Callaghan•ARTICLE•Irish Studies Review•2019•References: 4

Yeats’s poetry and drama centre on conflict, and crucially, on the clash between the mortal and the eternal. In this essay, I focus on the way in which The Wanderings of Oisin foreshadows and informs the treatment of eternity in Yeats’s later Byzantium poems. The Wanderings of Oisin explores the intensity of human longing for the eternal despite our time-bound nature, prefiguring his later impassioned though analytical Byzantium poems. Although t…

  • The Oxford Handbook of Percy Bysshe Shelley

Madeleine Callaghan, Michael O’neill et al.•BOOK•Oxford Handbook of Percy Bysshe…•2012

The Oxford Handbook of Shelley takes stock of current developments in the study of a major Romantic poet and prose-writer, and seeks to advance Shelley studies beyond the current scholarship. It consists of forty-two chapters and offers a wide-ranging single-volume body of writings on Shelley, building on the textual revolution in Shelley studies, which has transformed understanding of the poet, as critics are able to focus on what Shelley actual…

The volume builds on the textual revolution in Shelley studies, which has tr…
