Temporal Incidence and Prevalence of Bronchitis and Morbidities from Exposure to Ambient PM 2.5 and PM 10
Emerging evidence from epidemiological studies has shown that exposure to particulate matter (PM) affects brain and neurological health in addition to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. This poses serious public health issue, especially in developing countries with weak air pollution control policies and mitigation approaches. The study aimed to evaluate the short-term effects of ambient PM2.5 and PM10 (particles with an aerodynamic diamete…

Exploring sources of uncertainty in premature mortality estimates from fine particulate matter
Atmospheric pollution from fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) is one of the major concerns in China because of its widespread and harmful impacts on human health. In recent years, multiple studies have sought to estimate the premature mortality burden from exposure to PM 2.5 to inform policy decisions. However, different modeling choices have led to a wide array of results, with significant discrepancies both in the total mortality burden and in t…
High spatial resolution ozone risk-assessment for Asian forests
Background tropospheric ozone (O3) is increasing particularly over China and India, and becomes a major threat to Asian forests. By using the coupled WRF-Chem model at high spatial resolution (8 km) over Asia in 2015, we showed that both standards AOT40 (European) and W126 (United States) underestimated the O3 risk to deciduous forests and overestimated it to evergreen forests compared to the biologically based metric POD1. Both metrics AOT40 and…

Tropospheric ozone assessment report
Assessment of spatial and temporal variation in the impacts of ozone on human health, vegetation, and climate requires appropriate metrics. A key component of the Tropospheric Ozone Assessment Report (TOAR) is the consistent calculation of these metrics at thousands of monitoring sites globally. Investigating temporal trends in these metrics required that the same statistical methods be applied across these ozone monitoring sites. The nonparametr…
Currently legislated decreases in nitrogen deposition will yield only limited plant species recovery in European forests
Atmospheric nitrogen (N) pollution is considered responsible for a substantial decline in plant species richness and for altered community structures in terrestrial habitats worldwide. Nitrogen affects habitats through direct toxicity, soil acidification, and in particular by favoring fast-growing species. Pressure from N pollution is decreasing in some areas. In Europe (EU28), overall emissions of NO x declined by more than 50% while NH 3 declin…
Hongi, hangi, haka, moko
Tourist texts, such as brochures or guidebooks, are among the first sources of encounter between tourists and destination people. Indeed, such texts provide tourists with a ‘cognitive framework’ (Bhattacharya 1997: 372) for interpreting a destination and its cultures, and language in travel writing is paramount for negotiating between different cultures and meanings. Guidebooks should thus be read critically in order to assess the cultural images…
Italian American literature
Unlike its African‐American, Jewish‐American, or Irish‐American counterparts, Italian American literature still remains in the margins of mainstream American Studies. Many contemporary Italian American writers are virtually unknown to the general public and field scholars alike, while household names such as Don DeLillo deny the influence of Italianità on their works. Yet, as a number of Italian American scholars have been engaged in demonstratin…
Don Delillo's Fiction of Finance Capital
Over the years, few scholars have focused on the centrality of finance capital and its workings within Don DeLillo's fiction. Indeed, not only does the world of finance capital serve as a background to the actions and the events of some of DeLillo's most famous novels (i.e. Players and Cosmopolis ), but it plays a much more systematic and structural role in his entire oeuvre. The present article seeks to offer an overview of DeLillo's works as an…
Food choices, health and environment
Western diets are characterised by a high intake of meat, dairy products and eggs, causing an intake of saturated fat and red meat in quantities that exceed dietary recommendations. The associated livestock production requires large areas of land and lead to high nitrogen and greenhouse gas emission levels. Although several studies have examined the potential impact of dietary changes on greenhouse gas emissions and land use, those on health, the…
Morbid tiers of immortality
This article reads DeLillo's novel Players (1977) as an account of the transition from the 1970s’ capitalist crisis in the USA to what Greta Krippner calls ‘financialisation’. The process of ‘financialisation’ gave rise to a specific economic regime, social materiality, and a peculiar ‘structure of feeling’ grounded in finance capital. The protagonists of Players, Lyle and Pammy Wynant, participate in the fictitious vaporisation of social materia…
