  • Landlords, tenants and complaints: The Housing Association Tenants Ombudsman

    Open Access•Philip Giddings, Roy Gregory•ARTICLE•Public Policy and Administration•1996•References: 3

A major problem associated with the considerable changes which have taken place in the structure of public administration and the delivery of public services has been to provide effective accountability mechanisms. One very flexible mechanism is the Ombudsman institution which has been adapted in many different states and to deal with many different services. This paper examines how the Ombudsman institution has been adapted to provide an effecti…

  • The Use of Power in the Early Industrial Development of Hull

    Roy Gregory•ARTICLE•Industrial Archaeology Review•1992

Although never a major industrial town, Hull has a long history as one of the country's leading ports, having particular links with the Low Countries and the Baltic. During the eighteenth century the merchants had a need for power to process imported raw materials but due to the nature of the terrain, the town had no head of water to power wheels. Consequently some of the first ventures into rotary steam power occurred in the town, but this occur…

  • The Parliamentary Ombudsman After Twenty‐five Years

    Open Access•Roy Gregory, Jane Pearson•ARTICLE•Public Administration•1992•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Twenty‐five years after it was established in 1967 the Parliamentary Commissioner scheme is now criticized not so much on the grounds that it lacks teeth; the problem rather is that the system could be used with advantage a good deal more extensively than it is. The parliamentary Ombudsman has been under‐used largely because it has generated only bounded enthusiasm among MPS, the ‘gatekeepers’ and potential ‘magnets’ for the office. Survey eviden…

“A monetary policy that would break the coercive power of the unions by producing extensive and protracted unemployment must be excluded, for it would be politically and socially fatal. But if we do not succeed in curbing union power at its source, the unions will soon be faced with a demand for measures that will be much more distasteful to individual workers, if not the union leaders, than the submission of the unions to the rule of law: the cl…

  • Executive Power and Constituency Representation in United Kingdom Politics

    Open Access•Roy Gregory•ARTICLE•Political Studies•1980•Cited by: 1

It is sometimes argued that what helps to limit the political influence exercised by elected representatives in the United Kingdom on behalf of those they represent is the inability of MPs to ‘command the power of the executive’. Some MPs, however, are also members of the Government, and do command the power of the executive. This article examines the circumstances in which a fusion of constituency interest and executive power may occur. It concl…

  • Conservation, planning and politics: Some aspects of the contemporary British scene

    Roy Gregory•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1973

The extent of environmental degradation in Britain is largely determined by the aggregative effect of a large number of what are conventionally described as “planning” decisions. But because they serve to allocate the unavoidable societal costs of economic growth, many of these decisions are essentially political in character. Some of the crucial choices are in fact made by developers themselves in both the public and private sectors; in order to…
