Assessing synergies and trade-offs of diverging Paris-compliant mitigation strategies with long-term SDG objectives
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement are the two transformative agendas, which set the benchmarks for nations to address urgent social, economic and environmental challenges. Aside from setting long-term goals, the pathways followed by nations will involve a series of synergies and trade-offs both between and within these agendas. Since it will not be possible to optimise across the 17 SDGs while simultaneously transit…
The economic impacts of the 2018 Winter Olympics
The economic viability of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics is still being debated. Using the latest available input–output tables and tourism data, this study estimates the short-run impact of the event. The estimated macroeconomic effect shows that tourism spending linked to the 2018 Winter Olympic Games has contributed ₩1.9 trillion to national output, which is greater than the operational cost of ₩1.7 trillion. It is estimated that the ₩11…
Novel integrated agricultural land management approach provides sustainable biomass feedstocks for bioplastics and supports the UK’s ‘net-zero’ target
We investigate the potential in producing biodegradable bio-plastics to support the emergent ‘net-zero’ greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions targets in the UK. A ‘cradle to grave’ life cycle assessment was developed to evaluate GHG mitigation potentials of bio-based polybutylene succinate plastics produced from wheat straw-only (single feedstock) or wheat straw plus Miscanthus (mixed feedstocks) agricultural supply systems. For scenarios using mixed fe…

Nine Years of MowingMy Ghost
Research Article| March 01 2014 Nine Years of MowingMy Ghost Jeremy Wood Jeremy Wood Jeremy Wood is an artist and map maker who founded GPS drawing in 2000 as a method of digital mark making using his body as a geodetic pencil. He explores drawing and mapping as a means of expression as well as capturing all his daily movements for the last fourteen years with GPS as a form of personal cartography, whether it's over land, on water, or in the air.…
Global developments in the competition for land from biofuels
Competition for land
A key challenge for humanity is how a future global population of 9 billion can all be fed healthily and sustainably. Here, we review how competition for land is influenced by other drivers and pressures, examine land-use change over the past 20 years and consider future changes over the next 40 years. Competition for land, in itself, is not a driver affecting food and farming in the future, but is an emergent property of other drivers and pressu…

Understanding the ecology of plankton
Plankton are microscopic organisms living in the sea. They are responsible for more than half of the biological production of our planet. They also influence global climate, fisheries and pollution. Understanding the ever-changing distribution of plankton in the ocean is one of the grand challenges of science. The scope of the problem has been well documented in the 20th century, and new research tools should greatly accelerate progress in the 21…
Is "Symbolic Racism" Racism? A Review Informed by Intergroup Behavior
Holding that white racism pervades American politics, the theory of symbolic racism has been the subject of considerable controversy. A review of the theory and controversy reveals that Sniderman's apparent refutation (Sniderman, 1991) does not address the form of the theory advanced by Sears (1988) and Kinder (1986). The review highlights the symbolic racism construct (defined as the conjunction of traditional values and a racist negative affect…

Hints for Travelling Divers
Safe diving demands a minimum team of four or more members, each equipped with heavy apparatus and supported by boats, compressors, recompression chambers and other heavy plant. When travelling abroad, underwater ex? plorers must either organize a self-contained expedition equipped with all the necessary facilities, or plan to travel alone, diving at sites where local facilities and diving partners are to be found. This article provides hints for…
