  • Networks of Hagiographic Imagination and the Camino

    Open Access•Rose Walker•ARTICLE•Ad limina•2025

This essay proposes that the ‘pilgrimage’ roads of the Pilgrim’s Guide can be viewed as routes of hagiography, and that the main author of the Jacobus, ‘Calixtus’, was writing for a network of fellow authors. It builds on Christopher Hohler’s approach of 1972, which highlighted the rhetorical and ludic aspects of the texts, and, in that light, it examines the framework of the roads as presented on the first folio of the Guide. It re-imagines thos…

  • Artistic Dialogue Between León and Castile in the 10th Century

    Rose Walker•ARTICLE•Journal of the British…•2017

The middle of the 10th century was a high point for manuscript illumination in northern Spain when named scribes and illuminators created cycles of dynamic images for exegetical texts and bibles. Evidence gathered over recent decades through building archaeology has proposed a re-dating of buildings and sculpture previously considered Visigothic to the 9th or 10th centuries, thereby enlarging the corpus of Mozarabic architecture. This paper begin…

  • Becoming Alfonso VI

    Open Access•Rose Walker•ARTICLE•Anales de Historia del Arte•2012

Alfonso VI became the ruler of a vast kingdom and far outstripped his predecessors in the extent of his sway. Yet few would have predicted this at his birth in c.1040. A series of events between that moment and his triumph in 1072 shaped the king that was to rule a reunited Len, Castile and Galicia, and from 1085 Toledo. His parents, Fernando I and Sancha, defined him by giving him a name, Adefonsus. Even more than the family names Sancho and Gar…

  • Leonor of England, Plantagenet queen of King Alfonso VIII of Castile, and her foundation of the Cistercian abbey of Las Huelgas. In imitation of Fontevraud

    Rose Walker•ARTICLE•Journal of Medieval History•2005•Cited by: 3

In 1187 Alfonso VIII of Castile and his queen, Leonor of England, founded a Cistercian nunnery, Santa Maria Regalis de Las Huelgas, on the outskirts of Burgos. Despite the clear allegiance of the foundation to the Cistercians from the outset, the idea that the abbey was inspired by and even modelled on the nunnery of Fontevraud in Anjou is an encroaching commonplace in accounts of medieval Spanish history and art history around 1200. This study r…
