Relationship between cognitive function, oral health, and activities of daily living among older adults in the context of rural China
Objectives: Using symptom network analysis, this study explores gender differences in the network structure of activities of daily living (ADL) among rural Chinese older adults, examines structural associations between oral health, cognitive function, and ADL, and thereby identifies bridge symptoms within these associations. Methods: In this study, 1,276 older adults from rural areas of various cities in Anhui Province, China, were enrolled betwe…
The impact of bidirectional emotional support on social isolation in older adults
Objective To investigate the impact of bidirectional emotional support on social isolation among community-dwelling older adults and the underlying mechanisms of this effect. Methods In this study, 1,136 community-dwelling older adults were recruited from Hefei City, China in 2022 using a stratified random sampling method. Data were collected using the General Information Questionnaire, the Intergenerational Support Scale, the Social Network Scal…
The simplified Chinese version of the Nonrestorative Sleep Scale in Chinese young adults and measurement invariance across language and age
The simplified Chinese 12-item NRSS is valid and reliable for assessing NRS among Chinese young adults, and it can be used to measure and compare NRS between individuals using simplified Chinese and traditional Chinese, as well as across different age groups within the simplified Chinese user population
Nonrestorative sleep is associated with self-injury behavior and suicidal ideation in Chinese adolescents
Reduced NRS symptoms might decrease the risk of self-injury and suicidal ideation. Relieving NRS symptoms with appropriate interventions would be advantageous for adolescents' health
Nonrestorative sleep and its associated factors in Chinese adolescents and the moderation effects of coffee or tea consumption
Longer sleep duration, moderate after-class activity, reduced coffee or tea consumption, and promotion of physical and mental health may help reduce adolescents' NRS. Coffee or tea consumption may help buffer the negative associations of somatic symptoms, stress, anxiety, and depression with NRS
Multi-scale convolutional recurrent neural network for psychiatric disorder identification in resting-state EEG
The MsRNN demonstrated a capability in extracting discriminative rsEEG biomarkers for psychiatric disorder classification, indicating its potential to facilitate our understanding of psychiatric disorders and monitoring interventions
Assessment of Combination of Automated Pupillometry and Heart Rate Variability to Detect Driving Fatigue
Objectives Approximately 20~30% of all traffic accidents are caused by fatigue driving. However, limited practicability remains a barrier for the real application of available techniques to detect driving fatigue. Use of pupillary light reflex (PLR) may be potentially effective for driving fatigue detection. Methods A 90 min monotonous simulated driving task was utilized to induce driving fatigue. During the task, PLR measurements were performed …
Altered Effective Brain Connectivity During Habituation in First Episode Schizophrenia With Auditory Verbal Hallucinations
Background: Habituation is considered to have protective and filtering mechanisms. The present study is aim to find the casual relationship and mechanisms of excitatory-inhibitory (E/I) dysfunctions in schizophrenia (SCZ) via habituation. Methods: A dichotic listening paradigm was performed with simultaneous EEG recording on 22 schizophrenia patients and 22 gender- and age-matched healthy controls. Source reconstruction and dynamic causal modelin…
A Blessing or a Curse? Exploring the Impact of Environmental Regulation on China’s Regional Green Development from the Perspective of Governance Transformation
China's rapid economic growth has caused serious problems, such as environmental pollution and resource exhaustion. Only by improving the green total factor productivity (GTFP) can China's economic development get out of the dual dilemmas of environmental degradation and resources exhaustion. Although environmental regulation helps to improve China's productivity, its impact on GTFP is still controversial and deserves careful investigation. In th…
Improvement of postoperative quality of life in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma
Postoperative tea drinking had a positive effect on delay in clinical deterioration and improvements in multiple functions and symptoms associated with ESCC in men
Resilience as a Mediator of the Association Between Perceived Stigma and Quality of Life Among People With Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Background: Improving Quality of Life (QOL) is an essential objective in the management of inflammatory bowel disease. An accumulating body of research has been conducted to explore the association between perceived stigma and QOL among patients with chronic illness. Still, underlying mechanisms behind this pathway have not been thoroughly examined. Objective: To investigate (a) the effect of perceived stigma on QOL among patients with inflammato…
Regional lake ice meltout patterns near Barrow, Alaska
The coastal plain of Arctic Alaska contains many thousands of lakes developed in continuous permafrost, which are ice-free for only 3–4 months each year. The spatial pattern of lake ice meltout for 1870 lakes (>10 ha) in a ~9200 km2 study area near Barrow, Alaska, is analyzed using five Landsat scenes spanning a 35-year record. For each available year, a spectra-based clustering algorithm is used to differentiate water from ice during springtime …
The Primacy of the Mother Tongue
This article describes Indigenous Australian languages as having a history of pejoration dating from colonial times, which has masked the richness and complexity of mother tongues (and more recently developed kriols) of large numbers of Indigenous Australians. The paper rejects deficit theory representations of these languages as being inferior to imported dialects of English and explains how language issues embedded in teaching practices have ser…
