  • Leaders and Masses in the Roman World

Zvi Yavetz, Malkin Malkin et al.•BOOK•Leaders and Masses in the Roman…•1994•Cited by: 4

It is largely thanks to Zvi Yavetz that the Roman plebs has become “Salonfähig”. In numerous important studies Yavetz has focused his — and our — attention on the problem of the relationship between the ruler and the masses of the ruled. Thus, it seemed natural to choose various aspects of this relationship as the topic of a volume in his honour. The articles here contributed by thirteen eminent friends and colleagues deal with historical and the…

    Zvi Yavetz•ARTICLE•East European Jewish Affairs•1992

  • An Eyewitness Note

    Open Access•Zvi Yavetz•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary History•1991•Cited by: 2

As an ancient historian, I became interested in anti-semitism in the Roman world. I am convinced that Mommsen's terms Judenhass and Judenhetze are more appropriate for the ancient world than 'antisemitism' and, in an attempt to coin a better concept in English, I studied various forms of anti-Jewish propaganda through the ages. Having been born in Rumania, I had the feeling that the antisemitism of Cuza, Goga and Codreanu was somewhat different f…

  • Slaves and Slavery in Ancient Rome

Jerzy Linderski, Zvi Yavetz•ARTICLE•The Classical World•1990

Enormous numbers of slaves were absorbed into Roman society from the third century B.C. onwards. Mainly enslaved prisoners of war, they transformed the quality of life in the Roman Empire beyond recognition. In this anthology the author offers a complete collection of Greek and Latin sources in an English translation which deal with the great slave rebellions in the second and first centuries B.C. In a postscript Zvi Yavetz surveys the controvers…

  • Caesar, Caesarism, and the historians

    Open Access•Zvi Yavetz•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary History•1971•Cited by: 17

In I953 Professor Hermann Strassburger shocked a group of German school-teachers when he told them that Caesar was a totally isolated dictator; not a single Roman senator supported his decision to cross the Rubicon.1 The professor did not discuss Caesar's intentions, his final aims, or his role in history. Quoting Burckhardt, he said: 'To make rash guesses about a world plan leads to error because it starts from mistaken premises.' An ordinary Ro…

  • Plebs and princeps

    Open Access•Zvi Yavetz•BOOK•Plebs and princeps•1969

This work deals with the mutual relationship between the principes, from Augustus to Nero, and the city plebs. In a pioneering work which seeks to move far beyond simple class and ethnic description, Professor Yavetz asks the tough question: why did key Roman emperors make so many efforts to endear themselves to the urban populace? The situation was not entirely unlike what one observes in present day advanced societies. Although a ruling elite h…
