‘Over-indebtedness’ – or not? Household debt accumulation and risk exposure in nineteenth century Sweden
In light of the ongoing extensive discussion concerning the increasing financial risk levels of the household sector in modern, credit-based societies, this study explores the level and structure of credit markets in nineteenth century Sweden. The growing international research focusing on informal credit markets outside formalised institutions has demonstrated that credit was abundantly and pervasively included in the lion’s share of all inter-p…
Constructed national food and meal archetypes at international exhibitions from Paris 1867 to Aichi 2005
This study examines the selection of food culture objects by the Swedish state for presentation at the international exhibitions (world fairs) of 1851 to 2005, and in particular the methodologies used by Swedish National Exhibition Committees to select representative national food culture to be served in national exhibition arenas. Business and Politics in Europe, 1900–1970
Originally published in 2003, this book reflected an increased interest in establishing connections between the political history and the business history of Europe in the twentieth century. The book includes research on the interactions of politicians, businessmen and their institutions in eight countries, with particular focus on the highly charged inter-war period. Fourteen essays cover subjects under four main headings: the business - politic…
The Modernization of Swedish Credit Markets, 1840-1905
This study estimates the size of the so-called "informal," or unintermediated, credit market in one Swedish city through a period of economic transformation. In the early 1840s promissory notes accounted for more than half of the total credit market, and almost four times the value of credit channeled through the banking system. Even in the 1870s, the promissory-note market was twice the size of the loan volume of the banking system. By 1905 bank…
Swedish historical research on banking during the 1980's
The deregulation of banks and of financial markets has been the fashion of the 1980's. To evaluate the arguments that are advanced concerning the design of the banking system and concerning the future direction of banking activities properly, however, it is worthwhile to study the origins of these regulations. The same is true of what previous generations thought constituted experience-derived sound banking practice.1 While this theme will not ex…
The Kreuger Crash of 1932 in memory of a financial genius, or was he a simple swindler
This paper discusses recent Swedish research on an event now celebrating its fiftieth anniversary — the Kreuger Crash.1 It is divided into three parts. The first briefly introduces the ‘Kreuger problem’ and the scholarly work done on it during the 1970s. The second outlines the rise of the Kreuger empire, which is divided into three quite distinct periods: 1) the initial building industry stage (1908–13), 2) the match industry stage (1913–24), an…
