The impact of child sexual abuse material (CSAM)
Students’ Mental Health Profiles and Their Association With Health Behaviors and School Satisfaction in Dubai‐Based British Curriculum Schools
Health behavior, mental health, and school satisfaction are associated in school‐aged youth. However, most previous research examining such associations does not account for unique groupings of these variables based on person‐centered analyses. This study examined student mental health profiles and their association with health behaviors and school satisfaction. Students ( N = 315, M age = 11.39) from two British curriculum schools in Dubai, the …
The effect of victims and perpetrators’ sex on intervening in non-physical intimate partner violence scenarios
Non-physical intimate partner violence (NPIPV) encompasses emotional, psychological, and financial abuse within intimate relationships, increasingly recognized for its subtle yet pervasive impact. This study investigates demographic and situational influences on observers' responses to NPIPV scenarios, involving 381 participants (54 % female). Utilizing factorial vignette designs, we analysed how manipulating victim and perpetrator sex affected e…
EU’s “Fit for 55” plan, its economic impact and intergovernmental perspective
Sustainable development is a foundational element in European Union (EU) policies, yet there remains a lack of coherence among member states regarding the perception and response to environmental challenges, resulting in regional inequalities. The “Fit for 55” initiative by the EU is an ambitious strategy aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030, as part of its broader goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. This study inves…
The long shadow of accumulating adverse childhood experiences on mental health in the United Arab Emirates
Introduction: This study investigates the cumulative effects of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on adult depression, anxiety, and stress in Abu Dhabi, controlling for demographic factors, lifestyle, and known health and mental health diagnoses. Methods: Utilizing a cross-sectional design and self-report measures, the research aims to fill a critical gap in understanding the specific impacts of ACEs in the UAE. Based on a multi-site, cross-se…
Student profiles of physical activity, screen time, sleep quality and dietary habits and their association with mental health and school satisfaction
The interrelated nature of mental health and indicators of school success in children and adolescents has been under‐investigated from a person‐centered perspective. In this exploratory study, we examined patterns of health behavior in relation to mental health and school satisfaction. A convenience sample of 315 students ( M age = 11.39; SD = 2.045) from two British schools in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates participated in an online survey that…
Mapping the landscape of male-on-male rape in London
Male-on-male rape remains an under-researched area, and little is known about the characteristics and outcomes of this type of crime. This study examines 122 rape cases involving young adult and adult male victims reported to the London Metropolitan Police Service between 2005 and 2012. Overall, there were a number of similarities with cases involving female victims; however, male cases were more likely to involve strangers, substance use, and a …
Semi-Presidential Reform and Referendums in France and Romania
This paper seeks to examine how direct democracy was used as a means to achieve or to strengthen semi-presidentialism in France and Romania. Whereas the Fifth Republic is widely seen as the archetypal semi-presidential regime, Romania relied heavily on this particular model for its post-communist constitution but opted to drastically reduce the powers of an otherwise directly-elected head of state. Nevertheless, the Gaullist reforms of postwar Fr…
The influence of ‘High’ vs. ‘Low’ rape myth acceptance on police officers' judgements of victim and perpetrator responsibility, and rape authenticity
The impact of victim-perpetrator relationship, reputation and initial point of resistance on officers' responsibility and authenticity ratings towards hypothetical rape cases
More than just a method
Although the debate on mixed methods continues, it is felt that there is a new generation of researchers that take a pragmatist approach to research. We present the viewpoint of three doctoral students at different stages of our PhD research, whereby we advocate for the recognition and place of qualitatively driven mixed methods and take a pragmatist stance towards method/ology. We recognise the value and prominence of such a position, and descri…
House Prices and Credit Constraints
Most US house price models break down in the mid-2000s, due to the omission of exogenous changes in mortgage credit supply (associated with the sub-prime mortgage boom) from house price-to-rent ratio and inverted housing demand models. Previous models lack data on credit constraints facing first-time home-buyers. Incorporating a measure of credit conditions - the cyclically adjusted loan-to-value ratio for first-time buyers - into house price-to-…
Modelling Winners and Losers in Contingent Valuation of Public Goods
Contingent valuation is now the most widely used method for valuing non-marketed goods in cost-benefit analysis. Yet, despite the fact that many externalities manifest themselves as costs to some and benefits to others, most studies restrict willingness to pay to being non-negative. This can result in significant errors in policymaking. This paper examines the importance of this, explores appropriate welfare measures for assessing losses and gain…
Booms and Busts in the UK Housing Market
The often volatile behaviour of UK house prices between 1957 and 1994 is analysed in an annual econometric model. Theory suggests that financial liberalisation of mortgage markets in the 1980s should have led to notable shifts in house price behaviour. The evidence supports the predictions of theory, suggesting shifts took place in wealth effects, as in the consumption function, and that real interest rates and income expectations became more imp…
Atomism and The Illusion of Crisis
This paper responds to a recent claim by Shrader-Frechette that current particle physics, with its essentially atomist paradigm, is in a state of Kuhnian crisis. We respond to Shrader-Frechette's claim in two ways: first, we argue directly against much of the evidence used by Shrader-Frechette as indicators of Kuhnian crisis; second, we question Shrader-Frechette's application of Kuhnian categories to current research in general, pointing out the…
