  • A note of caution on the relation between money growth and inflation

Open Access•Helge Berger, Sune Karlsson et al.•ARTICLE•Scottish Journal of Political…•2023

We assess the bivariate relation between money growth and inflation in the euro area and the United States using hybrid time‐varying parameter Bayesian VAR models. Model selection based on marginal likelihoods suggests that the relation is statistically unstable across time in both regions. The effect of money growth on inflation weakened notably after the 1980s before strengthening after 2020. There is evidence that this time variation is relate…

  • Fiscal Indulgence in Central Europe

Open Access•Helge Berger, George Kopits et al.•ARTICLE•Scottish Journal of Political…•2007

In recent years, fiscal performance in Central Europe has steadily deteriorated, in contrast to the improvement in the Baltics. This paper explores the determinants of such differences among countries on the path to European Union (EU) accession. Regression estimates suggest that economic and institutional fundamentals do not provide a full explanation. An alternative explanation lies in the political economy of the accession process, and a game‐…

  • Does Conservatism Matter? A Time‐Series Approach to Central Bank Behaviour

    Open Access•Helge Berger, Ulrich Woitek•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2005•Cited by: 9•References: 33

Empirical studies crediting 'independent and conservative central banks' with lowering inflation and inflation volatility have been criticised for their focus on policy outcomes instead of policies, and for their unsystematic conflation of independence and conservatism. We present results from time-series models for the German Bundesbank that avoid these shortfalls. Conservatism matters in the following sense: ("i" ) more conservative Bundesbank …

  • Economic Crises and the European Revolutions of 1848

Open Access•Helge Berger, Matilde Spoerer et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic History•2001•Cited by: 13•References: 5

Recent historical research tends to view the 1848 revolutions in Europe as caused by a surge of radical ideas and by long-term socioeconomic problems. However, many contemporary observers interpreted much of the upheaval as a consequence of short-term economic causes, specifically the serious shortfall in food supply that had shaken large parts of the Continent in 1845–1847, and the subsequent industrial slump. Applying standard quantitative meth…

  • A State Within the State? An Event Study on the Bundesbank (1948–1973)

Open Access•Helge Berger, Jakob De Haan•ARTICLE•Scottish Journal of Political…•1999•Cited by: 6

In this paper we analyse certain periods in the history of the Bundesbank concentrating on the determinants of central bank independence as suggested in the literature. The Bundesbank law of 1957 was born only after a long and tedious political process which outcome was initially not at all clear. It is concluded that some determinants outlined in the literature played indeed a role in the making of the Bundesbank Law of 1957. Still, the Bundesba…
