Editor's note The following contribution originally results from an oral response to the presentations and discussions at the Access to Waxes conference in Berlin in December 2021. It is therefore, especially in comparison to the other articles within this issue, to be understood primarily as a kind of fundamental positioning and has been included here for that very reason. In it, the specific example of the Berlin Phonogramm-Archiv's holdings an…

    Open Access•Dörte Schmidt•ARTICLE•twentieth-century music•2020

After the Second World War, cultural politics has become a central medium for international relations. Owing to the particular conditions of their development, the relations between Latin America and Europe constituted an interesting case study in which the positioning of different nations in the realm of two competing political systems and the politics of memory concerning the recent war are intertwined. This article highlights five ‘moments’ in…

    Open Access•Dörte Schmidt•ARTICLE•Die Musikforschung•2013

    Open Access•Dörte Schmidt•ARTICLE•Die Musikforschung•1995

  • The Performance of Bacchylides ODE 5

    Open Access•Dörte Schmidt, D A Schmidt•ARTICLE•The Classical Quarterly•1987

The consensus of modern opinion on the performance of this ode is that it was not a properly commissioned epinicion, but was sent spontaneously by Bacchylides in an attempt to introduce himself to Hieron. Gzella, for one, argues that many so-called epinicia were sent from poet to patron in order to impress and win commissions. Hence one finds, or so he claims, the terms , though, to be sure, commissioned epinicia were far more common.1 One could …
