  • Access to Mathematics for Visually Disabled Students Through Multimodal Interaction

    Robert Stevens, A D Edwards et al.•ARTICLE•Human-Computer Interaction•1997

Mathematics relies on visual forms of communication and is thus largely inaccessible to people who cannot communicate in this manner because of visual disabilities. This article outlines the Mathtalk project, which addressed this problem by using computers to produce multimodal renderings of mathematical information. This example is unusual in that it is essential to use multiple modalities because of the nature and the difficulty of the applicat…

    Alistair Edwards, Alistair D N Edwards•ARTICLE•Democratization•1994•Cited by: 1•References: 12

Explanations of democratization are often criticized using criteria that cannot feasibly be satisfied. One possible result of this is that all explanations are made to appear woefully inadequate. Another is the misapplication of the criteria to deliver prejudiced judgement on rival accounts. The problems attached to such criteria are outlined. Replacement strategies adopted by different approaches are identified and assessed, stressing the constr…

    Alistair Edwards, Alistair D N Edwards•ARTICLE•Human-Computer Interaction•1989

Throughout the history of human-computer interface development, one aspect has remained constant: output from computers has been almost entirely visual. A continued and increasing reliance on visual communication has had a disadvantageous effect on users who have visual disabilities. A visual interface is of no use to a user who is completely blind; communication must use one of the other senses, and hearing is an obvious candidate. A number of h…
