Studies on the Hospitallers after 1306: Rhodes and the West
Variorum Collected Studies is a very useful series. Its volumes contain photocopied articles, which have often been published in obscure journals and conference proceedings, reproduced in their original format. Whether it really deserves the accolade bestowed upon it recently by the council of The Israel Academy, which in a report on Historical Research at Israel's Universities treated its publications as evidence of peer review, is another matte…
Templars and Hospitallers as Professed Religious in the Holy Land
The Templars and the Hospitallers were the two earliest and most famous of the major Military Orders of the Roman Catholic Church from the early twelfth to the middle of the thirteenth century. In this book, Jonathan Riley-Smith attends to the Templars' and Hospitallers' primary role as religious orders, not as military phenomena or economic powerhouses. In a prologue, four chapters, and an epilogue, Riley-Smith discusses the origins of the order…

The First Crusade and the Persecution of the Jews
Between December 1095 and July 1096 there took place the first pogrom in western European History, a series of events so distressing to the Jewish people that rumours of them reached the Near East in advance of the First Crusade, inspiring the communities there with messianic fervour, while dirges in honour of the martyrs are recited in the synagogues to this day. The first outbreaks seem to have occurred in France soon after the preaching of the…

The Hospitallers as Land-Owners
The Hospitallers owed their landed wealth to the generosity of lay benefactors. The great majority of their estates had come into their hands through gifts, over half of which were eleemosynary, the lands thus acquired being subject to no service other than that of prayer. In some cases even this service was excused.1 Most of the donations occurred in the twelfth century;2 eleemosynary gifts in particular were far less frequent in the thirteenth.…
