Diagnostic framework for causal inference in seasonal urban flooding
Establishing causal relationships between urban flooding and behavioral responses is challenging in tropical coastal cities experiencing seasonal flooding, where exposure often limits distinct control areas, rainy seasons with inundation episodes complicate discrete treatment timing, and satellite temporal resolution constrains flood tracking. We develop a framework that facilitates causal inference by shifting the unit of analysis from geographi…
Reconceptualizing urban flood modeling
Community engagement enhances undergraduate civil engineering capstone design projects
Over the past several decades numerous studies have shown the value of community engagement in global water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) programs. Engaging and collaborating with communities through the design process enables wider community acceptance and ownership of WASH interventions, ensures a more functional and impactful design, and opens the door for co-benefits of these systems. Accounting for a range of dimensions within a community …
Identifying parameters impacting Wash STEM education across the globe
This study seeks to assess the parameters impacting successful water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) educational outreach. Previous studies have shown a correlation between underprivileged communities and significant impacts due to water related disasters, such as flooding or water related illnesses. As a result, for several decades the international development community has invested in WASH-relat…
A spatial assessment of high-resolution drainage characteristics and roadway safety during wet conditions
Dirt
Dirt' reveals the fascinating world of filth that remains one of the very last taboos. Our major new exhibition takes a closer look at something that surrounds us but that we are often reluctant to confront. 'Dirt' travels across centuries and continents to explore our ambivalent relationship with dirt. Bringing together around 200 artefacts spanning visual art, documentary photography, cultural ephemera, scientific artefacts, film and literature…
Warfare in Late Prehistoric West-Central Illinois
Social-group competition and cooperation are critical elements of models of cultural evolution. Despite the presumed significance of such interactions, archaeologists find it difficult to measure these forms of behavior. An Illinois cemetery consisting of 264 burials dating to ca. A.D. 1300 illustrates the unique information that only mortuary sites can provide on the characteristics and intensity of prehistoric intergroup conflict. In this insta…
Carnivore alteration of human bone from a late prehistoric site in illinois
The nature and pattern of destruction of human bone by scavenging animals, probably canids, is described for 30 Oneota skeletons from a west‐central Illinois cemetery dated at ca. A.D. 1300. The most frequently damaged parts of the skeleton include bones covered by relatively little soft tissue, such as the major joints of the limbs, and those in the facial, abdominal, and gluteal regions
Izapa Relief Carving
Revising her Kentucky Master's thesis, Smith demolishes the theory that Izapa sculpture served as a transition between Olmec and Maya styles. She carefully isolates Izapa characteristics, groups them into computer-generated trait groups, and classifies the stelae into seven stylistic-iconographic clusters. Her tedious methodology creates an artistically unsophisticated mix of form and representation that should be kept separate. She concludes tha…
The Public Health Nurse's Role in Family Planning
Some of the basic principles in public health nursing serve as guidelines to the involvement of a public health nurse in family planning. These follow: (a) Public health nursing is an established community activity, based on recognized needs and functioning within the total public health program; (b) Health education and counseling for patient, family and community are an integral part of public health nursing; and (c) The nurse is prepared profe…
