O2-5.5 Estimation of the burden of occupational cancer in Great Britain
Introduction Prioritising control of occupationally-related cancers should be evidence based. We have estimated the current burden of cancer in Great Britain attributable to occupation for IARC group 1 and 2A carcinogens. Methods We calculated attributable fractions and numbers for mortality/incidence using risk estimates from published literature and national data sources to estimate proportions exposed. Results Cancer deaths attributable to occ…
Picking up litter
Tourism to protected areas worldwide has increased rapidly, prompting management agencies to seek enhanced visitor management including communication aimed at influencing tourists' behaviour to reduce impacts and strengthen conservation viability. Research has shown that the greatest success in influencing visitors' actions comes from understanding what they think about a particular behaviour. This notion was investigated in this study in Mt Fiel…
Agricultural origins
The appearance of agriculture is one of the most striking features of Holocene human history, a feature that has long been studied in an interdisciplinary fashion, bringing archaeology together with plant and animal genetics. This paper reviews new developments in that study, consequent upon recent advances in DNA science. Among these advances is the possibility of complementing modern DNA data with fragmentary evidence of ancient DNA. Following …

Environmental Preference
This article examines four domains of variables to assess their relative merit in explaining environmental preference. Within each of the domains, between three and seven specific attributes were measured, for a total of 20 predictor variables. The study site includes small forested areas, agricultural land, and fields, with little topographic variation. Preference ratings of 59 scenes representing the area serve as the dependent variable. Taken …
Marxism and Christianity; The Vatican and the Left; Reply by Carl Marzani
In his otherwise excellent review of Arthur McGovern's Marxism: An American Christian Perspective (MR, June 1984), Joel Kovel comments: "Anyone who, 30 years ago, would have claimed that even a tactical rapprochement could be conceived between forces of Christianity and Marxism would have been dismissed as a dreamer. And to raise the question of a synthesis between the two would have risked the judgment of insanity." I am not certain what Kovel i…
Single-Parent Fatherhood
This paper examines the growing phenomenon offathers being primary parents due to widowhood, divorce, separation, or adoption. Changes in mortality rates, legal custody arrangements, and adoption procedures are analyzed as primaryfactors in altering the composition of single-parent fathers in the population. Interviews with 20 single-parent fathers consider the successes and strains they experience in childrearing, in using compensatory services,…
