Assessing Children's Adjustment to Divorce Stress
This study examines die relative contribution of the Divorce Adjustment Inventory-Revised (DAI-R) on children's divorce adjustment with a clinical and non-clinical sample of 162 children. The DAI-R scales and total scores were correlated with standardized instruments of child adjustment, self-esteem, and family process. Parent report measures of child adjustment and family functioning, and self-report measures completed by children of adjustment …
The Divorce Adjustment Inventory-Revised
The newly revised Divorce Adjustment Inventory (DAI-R) is validated across two samples of divorced families. The DAI-R is a parent report instrument that assesses child adjustment and family functioning after separation. This inventory is a 42-item, empirically derived instrument that was found to be predictive of different criterion measures of child adjustment and family functioning. Five patterns of divorce were identified in a factor analysis…
The Child Adjustment Inventory
Children's adjustment to the early phase of the divorce process is examined in the context of the development of a new instrument that is designed for assessment with this population. The Child's Divorce Adjustment Inventory (CDAI) assesses children's adjustment to divorce and family functioning, from the child's perspective, at the time of divorce. This study examines divorce adjustment via each of the four factors of the CDAI, reporting signifi…
Gender and Age Differences in Child Adjustment to Parental Separation
The present study examined gender and age differences in adjustment among children whose parents have separated. Measures designed specifically to assess family functioning during the divorce process (the Divorce Adjustment Inventory-Revised, and Child Divorce Adjustment Inventory), along with a measure of self-esteem and interviews with children, provide an in-depth exploration of the experience of families during the transitional period of sepa…
Family functions and children's postdivorce adjustment
Data on school-age children of divorced parents were examined to determine which dimensions of family dynamics were most associated with the children's socioemotional adjustment. Those factors found to be most significant were family roles, behavior control, and affective involvement, as well as children's reaction to and insight into the divorce, and conflict in the home after the divorce. Implications for parent education and early intervention…
Identifying Family Factors That Predict Children's Adjustment to Divorce
In order to provide a means for identifying children at risk for socio-emotional dysfunctions, an inventory was developed based on a systemic analysis of factors influencing their divorce adjustment. A conceptual model resulted from a thorough review revealing five general sources of variation with regard to children's post-divorce adjustments. Items were empirically developed and analyzed in each of the five conceptual areas. Items that discrimi…
