    Open Access•Sarah B Andrea, Jerzy Eisenberg-Guyot et al.•ARTICLE•Work Aging and Retirement•2021•Cited by: 7•References: 11

The working lives of Americans have become less stable over the past several decades and older adults may be particularly vulnerable to these changes in employment quality (EQ). We aimed to develop a multidimensional indicator of EQ among older adults and identify EQ and retirement trajectories in the United States. Using longitudinal data on employment stability, material rewards, workers' rights, working-time arrangements, unionization, and int…

  • Supply side fantasies and precarious part-time academic labor

Open Access•Daniel Jacoby, Jonathan Boyette•ARTICLE•Education Policy Analysis Archives•2020

Reliance upon part-time instructors within U. S. post-secondary institutions has received a great deal of attention, particularly as the percentage of such faculty has become the largest single category of faculty in academia. Understanding how part-time markets operate may allow better policy. Most current studies on the subject examine national markets, and emphasize demand factors motivating expansion of the part-time workforce. Although the s…

  • Effects of Part-Time Faculty Employment on Community College Graduation Rates

    Daniel Jacoby•ARTICLE•The Journal of Higher Education•2006•Cited by: 16•References: 25

Regression analysis indicates that graduation rates for public community colleges in the United States are adversely affected when institutions rely heavily upon part-time faculty instruction. Negative effects may be partially offset if the use of part-time faculty increases the net faculty resource available per student. However, the evidence suggests that this offset is insufficient to reverse negative effects upon graduation rates

  • Pacific Northwest Labor History Association Conference

    Open Access•Daniel Jacoby•ARTICLE•International Labor and…•2000

I cannot provide a definitive answer to those of us pondering what the best alternative to capitalism is, but after attending the Pacific Northwest Labor History Association (PNLHA) Conference in Westminster, British Columbia, over the weekend of May 28–30, 1999, I can tell you that this is certainly a preferable alternative to standard academic conferences. As usual, the PNLHA was able to produce a cadre of historians (from the trades as well as…

  • The Transformation of Industrial Apprenticeship in the United States

    Open Access•Daniel Jacoby•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic History•1991•Cited by: 5•References: 2

Between the 1880s and 1930s, apprenticeship was transformed from an institution dominated by employers to one dominated by unions. Prior to this transformation, employers leveraged their ability to hire, fire, and discipline at will by requiring apprentices to post forfeitable performance bonds. Despite their financial interest in the resolution of contract disputes, employers who withheld employees' bonds judged their own cases. Agency theory he…
