  • The Ideal of the Self-Governing Church: A Study in Victorian Missionary Strategy.

Jeffrey Cox, C Peter Williams•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•1992

It is part of current missiological orthodoxy that newly created churches should obtain independence from cross-cultural missionaries as soon as possible. It is not often realised that much Victorian missionary thinking shared that objective. This important new work examines the ideal of the self-governing church in the Victorian period through a study of the official mind of the Church Missionary Society. The study begins with an examination of …

  • Too Peculiarly Anglican’: The Role of the Established Church in Ireland as A Negative Model in the Development of the Church Missionary Society’s Commitment to Independent Native Churches, 1856-1872

    Open Access•C Peter Williams•ARTICLE•Studies in Church History•1989

Between about …

  • From Church to Mission: An Examination of the Official Missionary Strategy of the Church Missionary Society on the Niger, 1887–93

    Open Access•C Peter Williams•ARTICLE•Studies in Church History•1986•References: 2

Crowther’s consecration in 1864 did not produce a church on the Niger which was entirely independent of the CMS. It remained financially dependent. Nonetheless, though technically still a mission, it had a very great deal of independence and, in some respects, it seemed to symbolize the Venn ideal - a self-governing native church. That the events of the nineties in the Niger represented a major disenchantment with Henry Venn’s vision of an indepe…

  • Healing and Evangelism: The Place of Medicine in Later Victorian Protestant Missionary Thinking

    Open Access•C Peter Williams•ARTICLE•Studies in Church History•1982•Cited by: 4

The second half of the nineteenth century witnessed a radical change in the attitude of missionary societies to medicine as an aid to evangelism. For the first fifty or sixty years of the century the talents of the medical doctor were seldom sought and, when they were, it was most often to provide protection for missionaries in areas of particular health hazard. In 1852 it was calculated that there were only thirteen European medical missionaries…
