Wealth and Wisdom in Yannai’s Palace
This article examines a dramatic story describing a conflict between King Yannai and Shimon ben Shetaḥ involving Nazarites, wealth and wisdom. The most original version of the story in rabbinic literature is preserved in Genesis Rabbah parashah 91. Previously, scholars argued for connections between this narrative and Second Temple realia . However, careful philological examination of all the parallel sources of the narrative yields no such conne…
Schismata and ʾ Agudot
Paul opens his First Epistle to the Corinthians with the exhortation “Now I appeal to you, brothers [and sisters], ... that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same purpose” (1:10). This plea is strikingly similar to a passage in Sifre Deuteronomy 96, where the words lo titgodedu are interpreted as “Do not be made into gatherings/factions [ʾagudot] ; rather, be all of you one gathering [ʾagudah]. ” Ana…
The “Halakhic Kernel” as a Criterion for Dating Babylonian Aggadah
Contemporary scholarship no longer seeks to identify what was once termed “the historical kernel” of stories in the Bavli. According to scholarly consensus these longer narratives in the Bavli were formulated more or less while the Bavli as a whole was being redacted and, as Jeffrey Rubenstein has argued, reflect later Babylonian rabbinic culture. Regarding the building blocks of these stories, literary analysis at times indicates that what the h…
The Homilies on Mishnah and Talmud Study at the Close of Bavli Bava' Metsi'a' 2 and Yerushalmi Horayot 3
The final sugya of the second chapter of bBM II bears a striking similarity to the final sugya of the third chapter of yHor. Careful comparison of the two units demonstrates that the closing unit in bBM owes its genesis to the parallel material in yHor. The detailed two-part discussion in the Yerushalmi was condensed in the Bavli into two shorter parallel units, one concentrating on the relationship of the various fields of endeavor to one anothe…
The Curious Case of Tefillin
