Maimonides the Universalist: The Ethical Horizons of the Mishneh Torah
Maimonides ends each book of his legal code, the Mishneh torah , with a moral or philosophical reflection, in which he lifts his eyes, as it were, from purely halakhic concerns and surveys broader horizons. This book analyse these concluding paragraphs, examining their verbal and thematic echoes, their adaptation of rabbinic sources, and the way in which they coordinate with the Mishneh torah 's underlying structures, in order to understand how t…

Must a Jew Believe Anything
The crucial question for today's Jewish world is not whether Jews will have Jewish grandchildren, but how many different sorts of mutually exclusive Judaisms those grandchildren will face. This book argues that the Orthodox practice of framing the debate with non-Orthodox movements in terms of dogmatic fidelity contrasted with heresy is not the traditional Jewish approach, and that the debate could well be framed in other ways, ways that would al…

Maimonides on the Science of the Mishneh Torah: Provisional or Permanent
What was Maimonides' attitude toward the typically medieval description of the universe presented at the beginning of his great law code, the Mishneh Torah? Was that account of the physical universe meant only as a statement of the best description of nature available at the time (and thus radically distinct from the halakhic matters which make up the bulk of the Mishneh Torah ), or was it meant to be a description of the true nature of the unive…

An interesting question arises in the context of the typically medieval description of the universe presented at the beginning of Maimonides' (1138–1204) great law code, the Mishneh Torah . What was Maimonides' own attitude towards that account? Was it meant only as a statement of the best description of nature available at the time (and thus radically distinct from the halakhic (i.e. Jewish legal) matters which make up the bulk of the Mishneh To…

Dogma in Medieval Jewish Thought: From Maimonides to Abravanel
This essay in the history of ideas seeks to trace the development of creed formation in Judaism from its inception with Moses Maimonides (1135-1204) to the beginning of the sixteenth-century, when systematic attention to the problem disappeared from the agenda of Jewish intellectuals. Dr Kellner describes, analyses, and compares the dogmatic systems of Maimonides, Duran, Crescas, Albo, Bibado, Abravanel, among others. English translations are pre…
The Conception of the Torah as a Deductive Science in Medieval Jewish Thought
In this essay I argue that Joseph Albo was the first medieval Jewish philosopher actually to attempt an axiomatic presentation of Judaism because while he accepted the Maimonidean thesis that the Torah was a deductive science he rejected the thesis that the content of that science was physics and metaphysics. Those of his predecessors who accepted both theses had no need to present an axiomatic account of Judaism since this was, in effect, the ta…

R. Isaac Abravanel on the Principles of Judaism
Within mainstream Judaism Moses Maimonides (1135–1204) was the first thinker to formulate principles of faith. This innovation did not go unchallenged. Maimonides was attacked from two directions. Some critics accepted his claim that Judaism had principles of faith but disagreed with his formulations of them. Others rejected the project of creedal formulation altogether. They did not claim that Judaism had no beliefs but, rather, that all the bel…
