Abigail and Her Honor Culture Wisdom
In this article, I examine 1 Sam 25 through the lens of honor culture, focusing on the interactions between David, Nabal, and Abigail. While the narrative is often read as a tale of Abigail’s wisdom in averting David’s vengeance, I argue that her wisdom is best understood within a society where reputation and public esteem are paramount. I analyze David’s request for payment and Nabal’s refusal as a challenge–response sequence characteristic of h…
Combat Furlough and the Characterization of Uriah the Hittite
In the narrative of David and Bathsheba (2 Sam 11) Uriah the Hittite is encouraged by the king to go home to his wife yet refuses to do so. For some, Uriah’s refusal is born out of piety and idealism, and he is unsuspecting of what has transpired between the king and his wife, Bathsheba. For others Uriah has caught wind of what has happened and realizes that David has summoned him precisely so that he should visit home, and cover David’s malfeasa…

Malawian prisoners reported adequate knowledge about HIV services albeit with gaps in specific areas. Prisoners from smaller, rural prisons had suboptimal access to comprehensive HIV services and female prisoners reported having less access to health care than males. Prisoners have great concern about their poor living conditions affecting general health and adherence to ART. These findings provide guidance for improvement of HIV services and gen…
Orthodox Rabbinic Exception to the Thirteen Principles of Faith
At its founding meeting in 1898, the Orthodox Jewish Congregational Union of America (OJCA) laid out in its charter that “we affirm our adherence to the acknowledged codes of the Rabbis and the thirteen principles of Maimonides.”1 In his seminal study of rabbinic attitudes towards the thirteen principles, Marc Shapiro has compellingly demonstrated that over the eight centuries since the time of Maimonides, affirmation of the principles by leading…
Medieval Monasticism and the Evolution of Jewish Interpretation of the Story of Jephthah's Daughter
Exegesis, Jephthah, Monasticism, Judges, Karairte In unanimous fashion, the midrashic exegetical tradition affirmed that Jephthah's vow was a commitment to sacrifice the first creature that greeted him upon his victorious return from battle against the Ammonites (Jgs 11.31). Several medieval rabbinic exegetes, however, posited a different interpretation of the vow: were the first creature to greet him be a person, then that person would indeed be…
