A critical science qualitative case study
Home Economics: A Definition (1979) was written by Marjorie Brown and Beatrice Paolucci to provide conceptual clarity to the profession. Their work resulted in an inaugural mission statement and three conceptual frameworks to guide thinking and practice, known as the Critical Science Approach (CSA). After 43 years, what the CSA means for the profession remains unclear. This qualitative study used a case study design to learn from scholars' histor…
Career and education planning among young black women
This qualitative study investigated how young Black women experience career and education planning (CEP). Eight women from West Texas completed a career exploration and decision‐making learning experiences scale and participated in semi‐structured interviews. Findings from the data provided a contextualized understanding of CEP, indicating that career exploration and decision‐making learning experiences, work‐based learning, and social agents pos…
Critical Science
The Critical Science Approach (CSA) was developed in 1979 with the intent to create a consistent conceptual identity unifying the Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) profession's philosophy, knowledge, and practice. This systematic literature review examines empirical CSA research published between 1979 and 2022 to better understand what the CSA means for the profession. A total of 71 articles met the criteria with the CSA highly integrated in 22 …
Effectiveness of work‐based learning training in secondary family and consumer sciences
This mixed methods study investigated the effectiveness of work‐based learning (WBL) experiences in secondary Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) programs, focusing on bridging the gap between secondary education and workforce readiness. Participants included secondary FCS teachers from public middle and high schools in Texas. The findings highlight WBL integration challenges due to varying levels of awareness, training, and industry partnerships …
Blending Genres, Bending Time
Western steampunk uses fantastic images of technology-out-of-time to create critical commentary on the notion of progress and the inherent tension between “civilization” and nature. As a hybrid subgenre it uses the steampunk aesthetic to introduce technology-as-spectacle—breathtaking, larger than life, focus rather than backdrop—and traffics in fetishism, making technology the stuff of fantasy and obsession. Through the steampunk Western, we see …
Don Meinig as a Teacher
DON MEINIG AS AN UNDERGRADUATE INSTRUCTOR (BY JOHN WESTERN) It is abundantly clear that Donald Meinig, though so very eminent a research scholar, never skimped his undergraduate teaching. Entirely appropriately, his first arrival at Syracuse University from the University of Utah saw him rostered in, yes, Geo 101: World Our not-quite-complete archives reveal that from then until his retirement from undergraduate teaching in 1989 his major lower-d…

The Verbless Clause in Biblical Hebrew
Thirty years after seminal studies by Francis I. Andersen and Jacob Hoftijzer, members of the 1996 SBL section on Linguistics and Biblical Hebrew gathered to reconsider the topic of the verbless clause in Hebrew. The results are published here, demonstrating the gains made in the interim and providing direction for future research.Contents: Cynthia L. The Implications of Demographic-Specific Inflation Rates for Trends in Real Educational Wage Differentials
We use data from consumer expenditure surveys to investigate the impact on trends in real wage differentials of using group-specific price indexes. We find that inflation rates decrease monoton-ically with the education of the household head throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, and real educational wage differentials, calculated using education-specific price indexes, widened somewhat more than nominal differentials. We also find that difference…

Trends in child support outcomes
This paper examines trends in child support award rates, award amounts, and receipts, We investigate four hypotheses that have been proposed to explain the downward trend in these outcomes during the 1980s: (1) changes in the demographic composition of the population eligible for child support, (2) increases in mothers/ income, (3) decreases in fathers’ income, and (4) inflation. Our results indicate that trends in nonmarital fertility can explai…
Ranking States Using Child Support Data
Data from the federal Office of Child Support Enforcement (OCSE) are often used by policy makers and others to measure relative state child support performance. In this article, we assess the limitations of several OCSE measures and compare them with a new index of state performance, calculated from survey data. This index is conceptually a more accurate metric of performance, in that it is comprehensive and controls for differences across states…
Cognitive readiness to parent and intellectual-emotional development in children of adolescent mothers
Seventy adolescent mother-child dyads were assessed longitudinally to determine relationships among prenatal maternal knowledge and attitudes about parenting, evaluated in the 3rd trimester; postnatal maternal perceptions of parenting stress and child temperament as well as maternal inter-actional style, evaluated when children were 6 months of age; and intellectual, linguistic, and behavioral development at 3 years of age. Mothers who were more …
The Influence of Nonmarital Childbearing on the Formation of First Marriages
We document a negative association between nonmarital childbearing and the subsequent likelihood of first marriage in the United States, controlling for a variety of potentially confounding influences. Nonmarital childbearing does not appear to be driven by low expectations of future marriage. Rather, it tends to be an unexpected and unwanted event, whose effects on a woman’s subsequent likelihood of first marriage are negative on balance. We fin…
An Examination of Women's Perspectives on Power
Historically, theoretical and popular conceptions about power have not included or addressed women's experiences. This study adds to the growing body of knowledge about women by examining women's perceptions of and relationship to power. One hundred twenty-five women, ranging in age from 21 to 63, were asked to define and explore power through a variety of structured and open-ended questions. The results showed that women's definition of power di…
Parents' perceptions and attributions of infant vocal behaviour and development
In the present study, parents of 3- to 12-month-old infants completed 3 questionnaires that assessed the nature and developmental course of parents' beliefs about their infants' vocal behaviour and development. Although all groups of parents considered their infants' vocal behaviour to be generally communicative, meaningful, and related to the development of 'real' language, these attributions varied with the age of the infant, the gender of the …
