Martyrdom and martyrs, Jewish
Today, the words “martyr” and “martyrdom” are general terms, denoting voluntary suffering and death for the sake of some higher value.
Bar Kokhba, Shim'on
Shime'on Bar Kokhba was a Palestinian Jew living in the second century CE . He appears to have been the undisputed leader of the second Jewish revolt in Palestine against the Romans (132–5), and for that reason, he has been a major hero in Jewish history, in particular in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries (Marks 1994).

Fra huskult til basilika
It is still an astonishing fact that no material remains of early Christian churches have been found antedating the building in Dura-Europos at the Euphrat River in present day Iraq. It was a usual private dwelling house that in 241 was rebuilt and transformed into a Christian cult place. This building, however, in no way resembled the magnificent Christian basilicas that were built from the time of Constantine the Great (ruling 306/324-337), and…
Religion og forståelse
The essay represents the author's inaugural lecture held on 7 December 2001 as a professor at the Department of the Study of Religion. The essay is partly a summary of the author's recently published monograph En religion bliver til, partly an elaboration of one of the main theses of the book. The development of early Christianity is closely related to a need for interpretation. Looking at 1 Cor 1:18-25; Rom 11:25-27; Matt 13:9-17; Mark 8:14-12 a…

Morton Smiths fortolkning af Jesus
The purpose of this small article is to present Morton Smith’s book, Jesus the Magician (1978a), seen in the context of his other writings. As well as that, Morton Smith’s book is related to some of the more significant contributions to the quest for the historical Jesus in the 1980s and 1990s. Generally, my evaluation of Morton Smith’s book is positive

The Jews in the diaspora of the Roman empire
There is little literary evidence and archaeological sources pointing to a high degree of contact partly in the sense of Hellenization of Judaism and partly in the sense of Jewish apologetics and Jewish influence on the non-Jewish world. But there is also evidence – the Jewish struggles and revolts and the Rabbinic literature – pointing in the opposite direction of conflict and isolation. In both the diaspora and in Palestine the Jews were involv…

Jøderne i diasporaen i romersk tid
In earlier research the situation of the Jews in the Western diaspora in the Roman period was often described as being essentially different from that of the Jews in Palestine: The diaspora-Jews were genrally regarded as more "hellenized" and less "militant". The aim of this article is to question such a traditional interpretation. This program is carried out in the following way: We begin and end by presenting and discussing the general situatio…

Historien og fortællingen
In his doctoral dissertation, “Den Kristne Grundfortælling” (The Fundamental Christian Story), Svend Bjerg pleads for the intimate connexion between Christianity and narrative. Christian belief is created by narrative, and the New Testament texts have to be understood as narrative, and treated as such. At the same time Historical Criticism of the Bible is rejected as a false way of treating Biblical narrative. In his article, the author proves tha…
Religion og politik i antik jødedom og tidlig kristendom
Initially, definitions of religion and politics are discussed. Then the issue as regards the Mediterranean areas is surveyed in general. The ideas of Eddy and Fuchs are adopted. Ancient Jewish history and literature from 175 B.C. to A.D. 135 are analysed under this point of view, and it is found that in all Jewish trends the religious and the political spheres overlap to a variable high degree. In early Christianity we find a main stream of non-p…
Templets betydning i jødedommen på Jesu tid
It is a widespread idea among students of ancient Judaism that the temple of Jerusalem in the post-exilic period gradually lost its religious and national significance and was replaced by the Torah, the Synagogue and a new spiritualized view of temple and worship. Bousset-Gressmann and R.E. Clements are well-known representatives of this hypothesis. It militates, however, against a great number of other sources bearing witness to the importance o…

Main trends in modern Josephus research
Josephus was a Jewish historian during the 1st century in the Roman Empire. In the Christian church, Josephus received recognition as a crypto-Christian Nicodemus character, a kind of Jewish church father similar to Philo, or a kind of fifth evangelist. In late antiquity and the Middle Ages of Europe he was respected and esteemed as a great author and historian. For example, a man like Hieronymus would describe him as the Jewish Livius. During th…

Hvad kan vi lære af Grønbech
Nogle grundlæggende religionsvidenskabelige metodeovervejelser.Vilhelm Grønbech (1873-1948) is so far the most important and well-known Danish historian of religion. In 1987, Professor J. Prytz-Johansen published a new book on Grønbech, and this is the immediate occasion for this article which surveys Grønbech’s life and works, and the secondary literature on Grønbech before and including Prytz-Johansen. Its primary aim, however, is to describe G…
Mig og min forskning
The article “Me and my research” (cf. Woody Allen) is an offspring of an earlier discussion between dr. Kirsten Nielsen and myself on her dissertation, There is Hope for a Tree. The Tree as Metaphor in Isaiah (Sheffield 1989, Danish edition 1985), especially on the evaluation of the function of metaphorical language. In this article I concentrate on the specific aspect of the subjective involvement in scientific research. In an attempt to push th…

Hellenismen i nyere forskning
The context of the article is a research project on Hellenism initiated and sponsored by the Danish Research Council for the Humanities since 1989. With the aim of widening and deepening this discussion, in this article, an attempt is made to go through a number of classical general works on the Hellenistic civilization and – in greater detail – t…
Dansk nytestamentlig forskning i 1980'erne
This survey is an attempt to contribute to a much needed discussion of how to improve the quality of Danish New Testament research with the overall aim to make it more attractive to a wider circle of educated Danish readers. In other words, this survey is meant as an attempt to call Danish New Testament scholars to a self-critical discussion of the ways and lines Danish New Testament research has taken in the 1980s wehre, in my opinion, it has lo…
