Deconstructing Dobbs
When the US Supreme Court's conservative majority overturned Roe v. Wade (1973) in late June 2022, it created legal, political, and practical chaos in the US, as abortion – previously a fundamental right under the US Constitution – was now under state jurisdiction. In this special issue, we cover a range of theoretical and practical implications of the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision and the stratification of reproductive fr…
Seeking Approval from Universities to Research the Views of Their Staff. Do Gatekeepers Provide a Barrier to Ethical Research
A "gatekeeper" controls access to an organization; "gatekeeper approval" is often needed before external research can take place within an organization. We explore the need for gatekeeper approval for research with university staff employing, as a case study, a project which collected data in Australia. This case study addresses known issues, seemingly rarely addressed in the literature. The Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC)'s requirement fo…
The tourism spectacle of fire making at Coranderrk Aboriginal Station, Victoria, Australia – a case study
This paper explores the emergence of traditional Aboriginal fire making practices as a tourism spectacle at the Coranderrk Aboriginal Station near Healesville, Victoria, Australia, in the late nineteenth century. Coranderrk was an important site where domestic and international tourism intersected with efforts of the state to Europeanise and Christianise its Aboriginal residents. It highlights the agency of Aboriginal people in this emergence. Th…
Cultural Ecosystem Services of Rattan Garden
Ecosystem Services (ES) are services provided to local communities by natural resources. Cultural Ecosystem Services (CES) are the nonmaterial benefits that people obtain from ecosystems. ES, and particularly CES are often omitted from cost-benefit analyses associated with development plans in favour of a focus on maximizing economic benefits. Consequently, economic development can lead to the disappearance of cultural values such as local knowle…
Winda Lingo Parugoneit 1 or Why Set the Bush [On] Fire? Fire and Victorian Aboriginal People on the Colonial Frontier
This insight is essential to developing cross-culturally appropriate land and fire management strategies in the present and into the future. This article demonstrates the need for further research into historical accounts of Aboriginal burning in Victoria
The World of Whistleblowing
This exploratory study investigates the world of whistleblowing. The topic has produced a great deal of discussion but little clear understanding of the contexts in which whistleblowers act or the paths they follow, or even a critical understanding of whistleblowing as a social and legal practice. The study articulates some of these boundaries through a mixed-method analysis. The authors reviewed extant quantitative data and conducted a series of…
Cool temperate rainforest and adjacent forests classification using airborne LiDAR data
The traditional methods of forest classification, based on the interpretation of aerial photographs and processing of multi-spectral and/or hyper-spectral remote sensing data are limited in their ability to capture the structural complexity of the forests compared with analysis of airborne LiDAR (light detection and ranging) data. This is because of LiDAR's penetration of forest canopies such that detailed and three-dimensional forest structure d…
Methamphetamine Abuse and Manufacture
Methamphetamine abuse is on the rise, particularly by women of childbearing age. This article describes the history and effects of methamphetamine use. The authors examine the ways exposure to the manufacture of this drug affects clients and social workers in the course of their work. Because children are frequently found at the scene of a manufacturing laboratory, the child welfare system often becomes involved, and child protective services and…

Dimensionality of the Attitudes toward Disabled Persons Scale Revisited
Data from the responses of 104 medical and rehabilitation students to the Attitudes toward Disabled Persons Scale-Form B (ATDP-B) were factor analyzed using a principal components solution, with particular attention to the problem of the number of factors to retain. Bartlett's test of the residuals was significant after the extraction of one factor, suggesting a multifactor solution. Conversely, examination of eigenvalues using the scree test, an…

Place versus Response Habits in the Presence of a Flashing Light
A recent study by Aderman (1 ) investigated the relative strength of place and response habits in a simple T maze situation in which rats were exposed to what Aderman called an outstanding visual cue. The cue was a lighted disk situated behind the positive end of the maze. The intensity of the illumination on the disk was constant. Following the training of the Ss, the disk was moved to the opposite arm, and critical test trials were conducted. S…
