  • Re-Thinking the ‘Social’ in British Colonial and South Asian History

    Open Access•Osama Siddiqui•ARTICLE•The Historical Journal•2024•References: 14

This historiographical review engages with recent works in British colonial and South Asian history that shed light on the emergence of the concept of ‘society’ or the ‘social’ in South Asia. The review explores three main areas for the study of the social concept including: scholarship on liberalism and colonial law; histories of colonial sociology and knowledge production; and materialist histories of political economy and concept formation. Th…

  • Chronologics: Periodisation in a Global Context

Osama Siddiqui•ARTICLE•The Journal of Asian Studies•2024

This is an ambitious, stimulating, and well-conceived set of essays that explores the issue of historical periodization in a global context. Edited by Barbara Mittler, Thomas Maissen, and Pierre Monnet, the volume emerged out of a 2017 conference on the same theme. At the outset, the editors state their intention to examine the uses of periodization schemes as “as concepts for ordering the past, and to understand the powers, the method, the logic…

  • Narrating Economic History and the History of Economic Thought in Urdu

    Osama Siddiqui•ARTICLE•Journal of Urdu Studies•2023

Muḥammad Ilyās Barnī’s (1890–1959) ʿIlm ul-Maʿīshat (The Principles of Economics) is an economics textbook that was published in Aligarh in 1917 and claimed to be the first book of economics in Urdu. In the chapter selected for translation here, Barnī narrates the history of India’s trade relationship with Europe, showing how European colonialism exploited Indian industry and gradually placed it in a position of economic subordination. The accomp…

  • The Alchemies of Science: The Kīmīyā Concept Across Persian and Urdu Intellectual Worlds

    Osama Siddiqui•ARTICLE•Journal of South Asian…•2023

This article explores the transformation of the kīmīyā concept across Persian and Urdu intellectual worlds in South Asia. It shows how kīmīyā , a premodern alchemical tradition, transformed in the nineteenth century to become the primary Urdu translative equivalent to chemistry and a popular synonym for wealth. The article argues that these changes were a result of changing conditions of knowledge production, specifically the expansion of print, …

  • Sparc: Community advocacy through a student‐led conference

    Open Access•Paavani Reddy, Joo‐Young Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Education•2022

  • Naoroji: Pioneer of Indian Nationalism, by Dinyar Patel

    Open Access•Osama Siddiqui•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2022

Biography is a curiously under-used genre in Indian academic history (in marked contrast to Indian popular history and cinema, where biography and biopics continue to thrive). Whether this absence is because of a dearth of sources, a theoretical scepticism of methods that assume a fundamental unity and narrative coherence of individual lives, or because Indian historians, as Dinyar Patel mordantly puts it, ‘are very prone to the vagaries of acade…
