Master narratives structure discussions of ancestry in Korea. Status conscious commoners and slaves made genealogical claims in early modern Korea, but what chungin, government-employed specialists, is unclear. In late Choson, increasing domination of the civil branch of the central government by capital civil official families led to the political marginalization of other yangban families.
