  • Alexis de Tocqueville and Three Revolutions

Open Access•Hiroshi Watanabe, Linus Recht•ARTICLE•International Journal of Asian…•2020

This essay is an attempt to think through the three revolutions, using Tocqueville's theory of “democracy” as a key. For Tocqueville, democracy is a society with “the equality of conditions” – in other words, a society that has no hereditary status system. In this sense, Chinese society since the Song Dynasty has been “democracy” as Tocqueville himself pointed out repeatedly. In his understanding, contemporary China was a “democratic society” and…

  • The French, Meiji and Chinese revolutions in the conceptual framework of Tocqueville

    Hiroshi Watanabe•ARTICLE•The Tocqueville Review/La revue…•2017•Cited by: 2

For Hiroshi Watanabe, ancient China offers an illiberal and democratic experience that could foreshadow the future of Western democracies. He invites us to fear a possible sinization of ,\merica, thus joining the fears of Tocqueville. By following the Tocquevillian analysis of democratic tendencies, it becomes clearer how China became a democratic society, from the Song dynasty in 960 to the end of the Qing dynasty in 1911, finding in Chinese his…

  • A Survey Aimed at General Citizens of the US and Japan about Their Attitudes toward Electronic Medical Data Handling

Open Access•Michio Kimura, Jun Nakaya et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2014

Participants from the US think that the extent of the sharing their identifiable medical records should be limited to the doctors-in-charge and specified doctors referred to by their own doctors. On the other hand, Japanese people find it acceptable for doctors of the same hospital to share their medical records. Even in unidentifiable manner, people in both countries think the profits resulting from the secondary use of medical records should be…

  • The effects on the predictive variance of a new subject’s score for a new test

    Open Access•Hidetoshi Ishii, Hiroshi Watanabe•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•2002

It is often required to predict the scores or their variations under interest. Ishii and Watanabe (2001) investigated, in the context of psychological measurement, the Bayesian predictive distribution of a new subject’s scores for tests and subjects’ scores for a new test. In this paper, the Bayesian posterior predictive distribution of a new subject’s scores for a new parallel test were considered. And the effects of the number of subjects, the …

  • A Bayesian predictive analysis of test scores

    Open Access•Hidetoki Ishii, Hiroshi Watanabe•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•2001

In the classical test theory, a high‐reliability test always leads to a precise measurement. However, when it comes to the prediction of test scores, it is not necessarily so. Based on a Bayesian statistical approach, we predicted the distributions of test scores for a new subject, a new test, and a new subject taking a new test. Under some reasonable conditions, the predicted means, variances, and covariances of predicted scores were obtained an…

  • Effects of self‐efficacy on adjustment to college

Open Access•Eiko Ikeda Hirose, Sayuri Wada et al.•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•1999

This study examined the effects of self‐efficacy on adjustment to college among 1385 Japanese college students. The College Adjustment Self‐Efficacy Scale (CASES) was constructed in order to evaluate the degree of confidence in the skills necessary for college adjustment. Three subscales were identified in the CASES: judgmental ability based on objective information, self‐controlled persistence of activity, and self‐adjustment in human relations.…

  • A Bayesian meta-analysis for reviewing effect sizes

    Hiroshi Watanabe•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•1993

Research reviewers must often assess whether empirical data obtained by a series of psychological studies support the conclusion that an experimental effect is meaningful or not. Recently, several quantitative methods have been developed in order to statistically combine and integrate the evidences across studies. In other words, meta-analysis is an analysis of the results of statistical analysis, and is usually performed on the summary statistic…

  • Regression between true scores

    Hiroshi Watanabe•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•1984

Our model presented in this paper is such that, given pairs of observed first test and second test scores, each observed score is expressed by a sum of true score and error score where the relationship between the pairs of true scores are strictly linear. The linear relationship implied under this model is much less strong than the essential τ-equivalence relationship. By employing this model and the split-half technique, it is shown that the est…
