  • Increased anxiety symptoms in adolescents led by school phobia

Open Access•Mengye Cao, Wenwen Shen et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2026

This study demonstrates a substantial increase in anxiety symptoms among Chinese adolescents over time, particularly among girls, with school-related anxiety showing the most pronounced rise. These findings indicate a growing mental health burden in community-based adolescent populations and underscore the importance of early identification and school-based preventive strategies

  • Relocation from China (with Chinese characteristics)

Open Access•Jason Garred, Song Yuan•ARTICLE•Journal of Development Economics•2025

Rising global political tensions and increasing use of trade policies are popularly seen as potential threats to globalization. Will these factors lead to the ‘decoupling’ of affected economies, or reshape relations between trade partners in more complex ways? We consider this question by studying the recent evolution of the economic relationship between China and the US, in the context of a sharp fall in direct China-US trade. Using firm-level a…

How did the 1918 influenza pandemic affect female labor force participation in India over the short run and the medium run? We use an event-study approach at the district level and four waves of decadal census data in order to answer this question. We find that districts most adversely affected by influenza mortality saw a temporary increase in female labor force participation in 1921, an increase that was concentrated in the service sector. We f…

  • Malaria and Chinese economic activities in Africa

Open Access•Matteo Cervellati, Enrico Esposito et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Development Economics•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 16

We present novel evidence for the influence of malaria exposure on the geographic location of Chinese economic activities in Africa. The hypothesis is based on the observation that many Chinese aid projects and infrastructure contractors rely on Chinese personnel. High malaria exposure might constitute an important impediment to their employment and productivity. Combining data on Chinese aid and construction projects with geo-localized informati…
