  • Automation, Augmentation, Value Creation & the Distribution of Income & Wealth

    Open Access•Michael Spence•ARTICLE•Daedalus•2022

Digital technologies are transforming the economy and society. The dimensionality and scope of the impacts are bewildering and too numerous to cover in a single essay. But of all the concerns around digital technology (and there are many), perhaps none has attracted more attention, and generated deeper anxiety, than the impact of various types of automation on work and on the structure of the economy. I focus on the ways in which the digitization…

  • Some Thoughts on the Washington Consensus and Subsequent Global Development Experience

    Open Access•Michael Spence•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic…•2021

This paper discusses the Washington Consensus, its origins, and its insights in terms of subsequent development experience in a broad range of countries. I continue to find that when properly interpreted as a guide to the formulation of country-specific development strategies, the Washington Consensus has withstood the test of time quite well. In my view, subsequent experience, especially in Asia, reveals a number of places where a shift in empha…

  • After Piketty: The Agenda for Economics and Inequality

Daina Ramey Berry, Mariacristina De Nardi et al.•BOOK•After Piketty•2017

Thomas Piketty’s Capital in the Twenty-First Century is the most widely discussed work of economics in recent history, selling millions of copies in dozens of languages. But are its analyses of inequality and economic growth on target? Where should researchers go from here in exploring the ideas Piketty pushed to the forefront of global conversation? A cast of economists and other social scientists tackle these questions in dialogue with Piketty,…

  • Equity and Growth in a Globalizing World

S M Ravi Kanbur, Ravi Kanbur et al.•BOOK•Equity and growth in a…•2010

The commission on growth and development was established in April 2006 in response to two insights: people do not talk about growth enough, and when they do, they speak with unearned conviction. The workshops turned out to be intense, lively affairs, lasting up to three days. It became clear that experts do not always agree, even on issues that are central to growth. But the Commission had no wish to disguise or gloss over these uncertainties and…

Women with an admitted history of abuse …

Maureen O Marcenko, Michael Spence•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•1994

A randomized trial tested the psychosocial efficacy of a home visitation model for women at risk of out-of-home placement of their newborns. After an average of ten months of exposure, the experimental group reported significantly increased social support, greater access to services, and decreased psychological distress. Implications of the findings for interventions with at-risk families are discussed
