  • To Give an Example is a Complex Act’

Jacob Meskin, Harvey Shapiro•ARTICLE•Educational Philosophy and Theory•2013•Cited by: 4•References: 4

Agamben’s notion of the ‘paradigm’ has far-reaching implications for educational thinking, curriculum design and pedagogical conduct. In his approach, examples—or paradigms—deeply engage our powers of analogy, enabling us to discern previously unseen affinities among singular objects by stepping outside established systems of classification. In this way we come to envision novel groupings, new patterns of connection—that nonetheless do not simply…

  • Double-Voice in S. Y. Agnon's “Hanidaḥ”

    Harvey Shapiro•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern Jewish Studies•2011•References: 1

It is widely acknowledged that S.Y. Agnon's story, “Hanidaḥ” (1919), represents a significant artistic transition for the author. Particular qualities in the story's narrative discourse, more so than in his previous work, anticipate Agnon's later liter…

  • Rabbi Hayyim of Volozhin's Non-Messianic Vision of the Present and Future

Harvey Shapiro•ARTICLE•Journal of Jewish Thought and…•2007

Recent studies have characterized R. Hayyim of Volozhin (1749–1821) as actively preparing for the messianic redemption. Contrary to this, I maintain that R. Hayyim was concerned with the immediate potential of the world in the context of historical time (divre ha-yamim), rather than with a world-to-come, in the context of messianic time (aharit ha-yamim). To R. Hayyim, the existence of the cosmos and the stability of a dynamic life-giving univers…
