Adaptive Legal Literacy in Crisis: Responsible Hotel Management During the Covid-19 Pandemic
Decision-making in relation to changing legislation within the hospitality sector, especially in hotel operations, has faced unforeseen challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper deals with critical aspects of hotel management in times of crisis. It focuses on the question as to how responsible hospitality management is constructed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing insights from a corpus-assisted analysis of hospitality legislation a…
Healthcare experiences of transgender and gender diverse adults in rural areas in US ‘affirming’ states
Transgender and gender diverse adults experience significant health disparities, including accessing and utilising healthcare services. Geographic location appears to impact health disparities with rural-residing transgender and gender diverse adults experiencing less healthcare access, utilisation of services, and ultimately worse health outcomes compared to their urban-residing peers. However, less is known about the unique experiences of trans…
Examining Sponge City coverage and perceptions in global news media
Many countries are developing sustainable urban water management approaches to tackle the increasing risks of rainstorms due to climate change. As such, in China the Sponge City Program (SCP) was adopted in 2013. To ensure successful adoption, the SCP should incorporate social indicators, such as public perception and uptake. News media is a key channel to relay information to the public, yet the role and influence of media outlets in portraying …

What helps cardiac patients exercise after treatment, and when? Understanding physical activity and exercise participation following exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation
Despite evidence suggesting regular exercise (i.e. structured, repetitive and purposeful physical activity) attenuates cardiac patients’ decline in health, our understanding of factors affecting long-term exercise participation among this patient cohort is limited. This problem is pertinent, given that less than half of cardiac patients adhere to exercise following discharge from formal exercise-based rehabilitation programmes. In this study, we …

Strategic Indeterminacy and Online Privacy Policies: (Un)informed Consent and the General Data Protection Regulation
Article 12 of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) requires data controllers to provide data subjects with any information relating to data processing operations “in a concise, transparent, intelligible and easily accessible form, using clear and plain language.” Linguistic inclusivity of privacy policies is no longer a matter of style, but has been a binding legal requirement under the new data protection framework. Article 5 GDPR sets …

The Discursive Construction of Antisemitism in Nazi Children’s Books: Elvira Bauer’s Trust No Fox (1936) and Ernst Hiemer’s The Poisonous Mushroom (1938)
This article deals with the construction and performance of antisemitism in Nazi children’s books. It provides an explorative discourse analysis of Trust No Fox as reported (Bauer, Trau keinem Fuchs auf grüner Heid und keinem Jud bei seinem Eid! Ein Bilderbuch für Gross und Klein, Stürmer-Verlag, Nuremberg, 1936) and The Poisonous Mushroom as reported (Hiemer, Der Giftpilz—ein Stürmerbuch für Jung u. Exploring the Discursive Construction of Obedience: An Analysis of Application Letters for the Position of Executioner in Hitler’s Germany
This article presents an empirical investigation into the construction of obedience in letters of applications mailed to National Socialist authorities for the position of executioner between the years 1933 and 1945. To this end, a corpus of 178 letters of application was compiled, annotated, and analyzed using the corpus analysis toolkits Antconc and Lancsbox. A quantitative and qualitative analysis of the corpus was conducted. The findings were…
Experiences of minority stress and access to primary care services among sexual minority adults in the United States
Primary care services are cornerstones for US health care, assuring preventive screening, maintenance of therapeutics, and access to specialty care. Sexual minority (SM) adults are less likely to have access to primary care services than their heterosexual counterparts. Additionally, access to health services among SM persons can vary by age. One plausible explanation for these disparities are experiences of minority stress. Thus, the purpose of …
Forum: Doing historical international relations
This forum takes up the question of how to do work in Historical International Relations (IR). Especially in the past decade, scholars have debated what modes of analysis are best suited to this sort of work and how Historical IR relates to the disciplines of History and International Relations. The contributors to this forum intervene in these debates and converge on three issues facing Historical IR—questions of methods, ontology, and disciplin…

Hybrid leadership councils: Envisioning inclusive and resilient governance
To address future challenges of planetary decision-making on key ecological and social issues in an increasingly nationalistic world, we propose a new global governance model of technocratic ascendancy that can be integrated with quasi-democratic norms. Our model proposes the creation of a series of self-organized “Hybrid Leadership Assemblies” (HLA) led by “Hybrid Leadership Councils (HLC)” and supported by a number of more specialized Issue Act…
Ceremonial ‘Russian dress’ as a phenomenon of court culture
Russian rulers introduced numerous dress reforms in the imperial period, transforming the appearance of state institutions and thus the image of Russia and its elite. This article traces the origins and development of ‘Russian dress’, a stylized version of female Russian folk costume introduced to the Russian court by Catherine the Great (1762–1796) and worn, in various forms, from the 1770s to 1917. We examine the symbolic role ‘Russian dress’ p…
