  • Displacement of Death from Home to Hospital in Historical Perspective

Asher D Colombo, Asher Colombo et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Interdisciplinary…•2022

The process of changing the location of death from home to hospital in Italy between 1883 and 2013 occurred as part of a wider, century-long shift in the attitude toward death in Western societies. A longitudinal analysis of data collected in Italian provinces, using random intercept models, reveals the extent to which the displacement of death was the result of demographical, socio-structural, and cultural processes and the extent to which the i…

  • Fuori controllo? Miti e realtà dell'immigrazione in Italia

    Asher D Colombo, Asher Colombo•BOOK•Fuori controllo?•2012

Since the start of the debate on immigration in Italy there has been considerable interest in analysing the ways in which the public discourse on immigration has changed over time. This article examines the changes that have taken place in the period from 1969 to 2001. It is based on systematic study of the principal weekly news magazines (1969–1981) and on the daily press (1982–2001). It demonstrates significant changes in the ways in which immi…

  • Italian immigration

Asher D Colombo, Asher Colombo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern Italian Studies•2004•Cited by: 35

This article reconstructs the historical development of foreign settlement in Italy. It shows how Italy is part of a number of different migratory patterns, some of which are interconnected, while others are quite strongly differentiated. This diversity means that the standard images that link Italian immigration with a high degree of social marginalization do not correspond to the more complex realities, and by focusing on short-term aspects sim…

  • Hope and despair

    Asher D Colombo, Asher Colombo•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern Italian Studies•1997•Cited by: 3•References: 3

This article presents the results of research conducted in Milan in 1993 and 1994, collecting life stories among Algerian immigrants involved in petty crimes such as shoplifting and pickpocketing. Against a broad picture of the presence of crime among foreigners in Italy based on official sources, the article reconstructs the social and familial contexts of the immigrants interviewed, analyzes the ways they arrived and settled, and why they chose…
