  • Local Exposure Effect of the 2018 South Korea Refugee Crisis

    Yoonseok Lee•ARTICLE•Asian Survey•2025•Cited by: 2•References: 17

How do local natives react to a sudden influx of asylum seekers? Scholarship has consistently found that respondents exposed to a refugee crisis tend to exhibit an increase in anti-immigrant attitudes. However, because most such studies have been conducted in a Western setting, we have surprisingly little understanding of how natives would react in a different political setting, especially in an East Asian context. I use difference-in-differences…

  • Dynamic and non‐neutral productivity effects of foreign ownership

Open Access•Yoonseok Lee, Mary E Lovely et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Applied Econometrics•2023

This paper studies two novel productivity characteristics of foreign acquisition on high‐tech manufacturing firms: the dynamic and the non‐Hicks‐neutral effects. A dynamic productivity effect of foreign ownership arises when adoption of foreign technology and management practices takes time to fully realize. Furthermore, these dynamic adjustments may be capital or labor augmenting as adoption of advanced production technologies tends to have non‐…

  • Adaptive Elastic Net GMM Estimation With Many Invalid Moment Conditions

Mehmet Caner, Xu Han et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Economic…•2018

This article develops the adaptive elastic net generalized method of moments (GMM) estimator in large-dimensional models with potentially (locally) invalid moment conditions, where both the number of structural parameters and the number of moment conditions may increase with the sample size. The basic idea is to conduct the standard GMM estimation combined with two penalty terms: the adaptively weighted lasso shrinkage and the quadratic regulariz…

  • Treatment Effects With Unobserved Heterogeneity

Sung Jae Jun, Yoonseok Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Economic…•2016

We propose the sharp identifiable bounds of the potential outcome distributions using panel data. We allow for the possibility that statistical randomization of treatment assignments is not achieved until unobserved heterogeneity is properly controlled for. We use certain stationarity assumptions to obtain the sharp bounds. Our approach allows for dynamic treatment decisions, where the current treatment decisions may depend on the past treatments…

  • Measuring Social Tension from Income Class Segregation

Yoonseok Lee, Donggyun Shin•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Economic…•2016

We develop an index that effectively measures the level of social tension generated by income class segregation. We adopt the basic concepts of between-group difference (or alienation) and within-group similarity (or identification) from the income [bi]polarization literature; but we allow for asymmetric degrees of between-group antagonism in the alienation function, and construct a more effective identification function using both the relative d…

  • Bringing “Honest Capital” to Poor Borrowers

    Bruce G Carruthers, Timothy W Guinnane et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Interdisciplinary…•2011•Cited by: 6•References: 9

The Uniform Small Loan Law (usll)—the primary tool of the Russell Sage Foundation (rsf) intended to improve credit conditions for poor people in the United States during first decades of the twentieth century—created a new class of lenders who could legally make small loans at interest rates exceeding those allowed for banks. By the 1930s, about two-thirds of the states had passed the usll. Econometric models show that urbanization, state-level e…
