  • Adventures in sound. Rhoda Power, archaeology and BBC Schools Radio, 1941-1945

    Jan Lewis•ARTICLE•Women s History Review•2024

This paper examines the collaboration between BBC radio producer Rhoda Power and professional archaeologists Dina Dobson and Jacquetta Hawkes, in the production of the Schools radio series How Things Began. During the Second World War, radio became an important way of conveying educational information to the citizens of Britain. At the same time, archaeology was consolidating its role in British public life. The discussion considers the technique…

  • “Of Every Age Sex & Condition”: The Representation of Women in the Constitution

Jan Lewis•CHAPTER•Colonial America and the Early…•2017

It is commonly believed that women are nowhere mentioned in the American Constitution. Although the absence of women from the Constitution has seemed quite clear, scholars have not known what to make of this silence. It was Monday, June 11, and the delegates who had convened in Philadelphia to revise the Articles of Confederation were now into their second week of secret meetings. The issue before the convention was who should vote for each branc…

  • The serious leisure career hierarchy of Australian motorcycle road racers

    Jan Lewis, Ian Patterson et al.•ARTICLE•World Leisure & Recreation•2013•Cited by: 6•References: 5

The academic study of motorcycle racing represents a relatively new area of research. While numerous studies have been conducted on motorcycle gangs, no studies have investigated the serious leisure world of the motorcycle racer, a sport in which motorcyclists may reach speeds in excess of 200 km/hour, with accidents likely to result in serious injury or death. A small sample of eight motorcycle road racers who, at the time of this research, were…

  • Doing It in the Dirt: High sensation seeking motocross racers

    Jan Lewis•ARTICLE•Annals of Leisure Research•2006•Cited by: 1•References: 10

Determining the psychological characteristics of long‐term participants in a high‐risk sport is relevant to understanding their persistence with the chosen sport. Studies have shown that participants in high‐risk sports such as skydiving, big wave surfing and mountain climbing have higher scores on Zuckerman's Sensation Seeking Scale than people in the general population. This study sets out to investigate whether motocross racers in Central Quee…

  • A President in the Family: Thomas Jefferson, Sally Hemings, and Thomas Woodson

Jan Lewis, Byron W Woodson•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2002

Byron W. Woodson Sr. traces his descent from Thomas Woodson, who, according to Wood-son family oral history, was the first child of Sally Hemings and Thomas Jefferson. For years, white historians scoffed at this story, so the Woodson family happily cooperated when Dr. Eugene Foster proposed DNA tests that might clarify whether the Woodsons and others who claim descent from Hemings and Jefferson bore Jefferson's genetic markers. As Woodson's mothe…

  • Slavery and the Market

    Jan Lewis•ARTICLE•Reviews in American History•2000•Cited by: 1•References: 2

The subtitle of Walter Johnson's remarkable book is "life inside the antebellum slave market," by which he means not only the actual market in human chattel in New Orleans, from which he draws much of his evidence, but slavery more generally. The history of the slave market, Johnson says, is "in no small measure, the story of antebellum slavery" (p. 3). It is "the story of the making of the antebellum south" (p. 18). The vantage point for most co…

  • Variations on a Theme by Jefferson

Jan Lewis, Jay Fliegelman•ARTICLE•Reviews in American History•1994

Jay Fliegelman's dazzling essay on the cultural context of the Declaration of Independence, Declaring Independence: Jefferson, Natural Language, and the Culture of Performance, is an elaboration of the wonderful discovery that Jefferson intended the Declaration of Independence to be spoken and hence performed, and not simply read. Jefferson's final draft of the Declaration is punctuated by a series of what might appear to be single and double quo…
