Institutional investors in the Portuguese credit market (1550–1800): The case of the Misericórdias
This article questions the drivers behind the distribution of savings in different capital markets in Portugal between 1550 and 1800. A novel dataset of credit transactions, interest rates and debt service documents a shift in the lenders' investment behaviour. By 1712, one of the leading institutional creditors—the Misericórdias —had ceased to allocate funds to the sovereign debt market. Data reveal that this disinvestment was neither related to…

Historical gender discrimination does not explain comparative Western European development: Evidence from Portugal, 1300-1900
Gender discrimination has been pointed out as a determining factor behind the long-run divergence in incomes of Southern vis-à-vis Northwestern Europe. In this paper, we show that women in Portugal were not historically more discriminated against than those in other parts of Western Europe, including England and the Netherlands. We rely on a new dataset of thousands of observations from archival sources covering six centuries, and we complement i…
Introduction to the Thematic Dossier | Economy and Society: Politics, practices, agents, and institutions
Interplay of the Economy and Society The economic orientation or the concept of “economic action” (Wirtschaften) introduced by Max Weber in his essays on the sociology of economics addresses the issue of satisfying desires for “utilities” (Nutzleistungen) as an exercise of an actor’s control over a certain resource. This resource is, originally, driven and directed towards economic ends. Following this common thread, “... the definition of ‘eco…
Debt Litigation and the Performance of Law Courts in Eighteenth-Century Portugal
Theoretically, the extent to which the eighteenth-century Portuguese legal system was able to enforce loan contracts should be evident from the duration of the court proceedings and the execution of the collateral that secured the loans. Yet, data from a newly assembled data set that includes the contracts established by the Lisbon Misericórdia-the major lay brotherhood in Portugal and a leading creditor in the city-as well as 990 lawsuits from i…
Sugar and spices in Portuguese Renaissance medicine
The history of medicine in late fifteenth and sixteenth-century Portugal cannot be dissociated from the evolution of the monarchy and overseas expansion. Kings and queens were responsible for changes in the institutional structures of charity, creating new hospitals (especially Nossa Senhora do Pópulo in Caldas and Todos-os-Santos in Lisbon) and a new set of confraternities—the Misericórdias—that would take charge of most hospitals in the kingdom…
