Disaggregating Aggravated Assault
Diverse forms of nonfatal gun violence are grouped into a single aggravated assault offense category in national law enforcement crime data, limiting the development of targeted crime prevention efforts. This study assesses how nonfatal shootings differ from other forms of aggravated gun assault that do not involve a nonfatal shooting. A fuzzy matching procedure was used to link data from three local police departments to national crime data, all…
Soldgeschäfte, Klientelismus, Korruption in der Frühen Neuzeit
Recent studies of mercenary service and pensions in the Swiss Confederation have done much to revise the traditional picture of Swiss ‘neutrality’ and the receipt of foreign pensions. Christoph Windler, Benjamin Hitz and Philippe Rogger, to name only the most prominent, have sought to place the Swiss experience in a wider European context and to analyse the broader issues of patronage, venality and ‘corruption’. The present volume stems from a co…
Verhandelte Stadt
Research on the growth of towns in medieval Alsace over the past generation has been intense, but it has focused, chronologically, mostly on the centuries before 1500 and, typologically, on identifying indicators of urban quality. Elaborate schemes of determining urban status have been put forward. They include circumvallation, the use of a common seal, the right to reserve legal matters to the commune alone (the jus de non evocando), alongside c…
The Problem of Nationalism in the Early Reformation
Historians frequently dismiss any use of the term nationalism in the pre-modern period as conceptually illegitimate. In the early Reformation in Germany, the welter of confusing and competing terms to describe Luther’s audience—“nation,” “tongue,” “fatherland,” patria—appears to confirm that scepticism. At a regional level, however, where the descriptor Land lacks a precise English equivalent, a consciousness of local identity with undeniable “na…
The Swiss and their Neighbours, 1460-1560
Renewed interest in Swiss history has sought to overcome the old stereotypes of peasant liberty and republican exceptionalism. The heroic age of the Confederation in the fifteenth century is now seen as a turning point as the Swiss polity achieved a measure of institutional consolidation and stability, and began to mark out clear frontiers. This book questions both assumptions. It argues that the administration of the common lordships by the cant…
The Logic of Political Conflict in Medieval Cities
At the heart of Patrick Lantschner’s argument in this book lies the contention that European cities were not monolithic but polycentric, so that factionalism and conflict were inherent in their political make-up. In that, the author contends, European cities in general did not deviate significantly from patterns of urban dissent and rebelliousness encountered in the cities of the Near or Far East. Against the grain of arguments advanced by Charle…

Habsburger Herrschaft vor Ort weltweit (1300–1600)
Among the profusion of recent studies on the Holy Roman Empire, the volume edited by Bob Evans and Peter Wilson, entitled The Holy Roman Empire, 1495–1806: A European Perspective (reviewed in German History 31, 3, 2013), did much to cast light on the non-German periphery of the many domains under Habsburg rule. It was pointed out, however, that more could have been said about territories which had once been or which remained central to Habsburg p…
Città e campagne del basso medioevo
Giuliano Pinto is a distinguished scholar whose principal writings have focused on town–country relations—a perennial topic of Italian historiography. This Festschrift brings together eleven essays by Pinto’s students, some of which venture beyond the scope of the title. Maria Ginatempo updates her studies of medieval population to survey the lesser urban communes of the centre-north (Chittolini’s quasi-città ), many of which succeeded in maintai…
Writing and the Administration of Medieval Towns
The thirty-three essays in these two volumes (Utrecht Studies in Medieval Literacy, vols. 27 and 28) span a wide chronological and geographical range: from the tenth to the sixteenth century, from Scandinavia to the Mediterranean, and from the Atlantic to the Black Sea. Just under half the essays are devoted to eastern Europe, from Livonia to Poland, Ruthenia, Hungary, Transylvania and Croatia. In descending order, a further six treat the Low Cou…
The City-State in Europe, 1000-1600Hinterland, Territory, Region
This book provides the first comprehensive study of city‐states in medieval Europe for more than a century. Rather than highlighting the political and cultural achievements of city‐states, above all those of central and northern Italy, it offers a detailed comparison of city‐states in an urban belt which spanned the Alps from Italy to Switzerland, Germany, and the Low Countries, focusing on their territorial expansion: Why, how, and with what con…
City-State in Europe, 1000-1600
"No detailed comparison of the city-state in medieval Europe has been undertaken over the last century. Research has concentrated on the role of city-states and their republican polities as harbingers of the modern state, or else on their artistic and cultural achievements, above all in Italy. Much less attention has been devoted to the cities' territorial expansion: why, how, and with what consequences cities in the urban belt, stretching from c…

Town, Country, and Regions in Reformation Germany
This collection of essays covers relations between town and country, regional economic systems, and historical regional studies in late medieval and early modern Germany, in particular how these bear upon social and religious change in the age of the Reformation. Starting from case-studies of South-West Germany, Switzerland and Alsace, the essays broaden out to consider the formation of economic landscapes, the development of urban territories, a…

The German Peasants' War and the "Crisis of Feudalism." Reflections On a Neglected Theme
The view that the Peasants' War stemmed from a "crisis of feudalism" has been principally advanced by Peter Blickle. His dominant interpretation of the War fuses the late medieval economic crisis and the struggle for territorial consolidation by means of a revived serfdom into a general crisis of feudalism. But this argument underplays the profound changes already underway in the social and economic structure of the main areas of revolt—the comme…

The ‘Volksreformation’ of Thomas Müntzer in Allstedt and Mühlhausen
As the fieriest champion of the Radical Reformation Thomas Müntzer remains an enigma. A spate of recent works has greatly increased our knowledge of the development of his theology and of his contribution to the Peasants' War in central Germany, but they have failed to resolve the precise relationship between his theological convictions and his involvement in social revolution. A profusion of Marxist writings, above all from East Germany, has str…

From Polemic to Sobriety
As the quincentenary of Miintzer's birth looms ominously in 1989, the manufactories of research are already working overtime. After the spate of publications on the Peasants' War in 1975 a lull in production set in, with the market subsequently depressed by severe competition from the Luther anniversary in 1983. Now the Müntzer industry has once again picked up, but the models coming off the production line bear little resemblance to the crude an…

Freiburg and the Breisgau
This regional study examines the declining fortunes of a craft town on the Upper Rhine from 1450 to 1530, in the context of its relations with the country communities around it. In the debate on the transition between feudalism and capitalism in this period, rival interpretations have focused on town and country in isolation from each other. Tom Scott has used the techniques of historical and economic geography to examine them as a totality, cons…
