  • Money and the Making of the American Revolution

Andrew David Edwards•BOOK•Money and the Making of the…•2025

  • Against Definition

    Andrew David Edwards•ARTICLE•Critical Historical Studies•2025•References: 1

Defining money and making the definition stick are political acts with a history. Arguments about the nature of money are part of this process. The question of the fundamental basis of money in law, the state, or exchange is less about history and more about the present. Definitions of money have also marked the boundaries of our historical imaginations. Historians have long been interested in making definitions as accurate and rich as possible. …

  • Capitalism In Global History

    Open Access•Andrew David Edwards, Peter Hill et al.•ARTICLE•Past & Present•2020•Cited by: 2

This virtual issue affirms the relevance of global history to the history of capitalism, and the relevance of capitalism to global history. Neither proposition is self-evident. ‘Global history’ emerged in the early 1990s, in the wake of the demise of the Soviet Union and an apparently triumphant New World Order of ‘globalization’, as well as the peak of the linguistic-cultural turn across the academic humanities and social sciences. The New England merchant Nathaniel Sparhawk wrote to Charles Watson-Wentworth, 2nd Marquis of Rockingham, in 1765: There has never happened among us anything that has thrown the people of this province, and indeed the whole continent, into such a consternation as this Act has occasioned. And besides its being universally disliked, it is thought by the best judges here to be wholly impracticable, from the nature of the Act and the peculiar circums…

  • The American Revolution and Christine Desan's New History of Money

    Open Access•Andrew David Edwards•ARTICLE•Law & Social Inquiry•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 12

This essay argues that Christine Desan's Making Money: Coin, Currency and the Coming of Capitalism intervenes decisively in debates over the origin of money, while making a fundamental contribution to the legal history of money, the philosophy of money, and the history of capitalism. Desan shows money to be a mode of governance, created by rulers to extend their power, and maintained and managed by their successors. She argues that British politi…
