Geostatistics grew from meteorologists' desire to interpolate weather characteristics from sparse data, and from mining engineers who wanted to estimate quantities of minerals in bodies of rock from drill cores. Regionalized variable theory has many potential applications in physical geography. The principal one is the estimation of properties distributed over the earth's surface to assess their spatial variation.
