Foundations of Critical Race Theory in Education
Our Masters the Commons Begin Now to Roar’: Parliament in Scribal Verse, 1621–81
Scribal verse was an important source of news and comment about parliament in 17th‐century Britain, especially in the 1620s and 1660s–80s. Unlike other forms of scribal news, poems that circulated in manuscript did not report on parliamentary proceedings as such, but either summarised parliamentary news or provided comment on parliament's actions, nature or wider purpose, and typically presented parliament as a unitary agent that expressed a sing…
John Tutchin's Observator , Comment Serials, and the ‘Rage of Party’ in Britain, 1678 – C. 1730
The importance of print in the ‘rage of party’ of late seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century Britain is well known, but scholars have paid insufficient attention to the press phenomenon that provided the most persistent and undiluted partisan voices of the era, the comment serial. Comment serials – regular printed publications designed explicitly to present topical analysis, opinion, and advice – were fashioned as powerful weapons for partisa…
The relationship between the prior school lives of adult educators and their beliefs about teaching adults
Research in the K-12 field about teaching beliefs reveals that past school experiences have a tremendous influence on educators' present beliefs about teaching. However, little research exists regarding the nature of teaching beliefs of adult educators, particularly how their prior school experiences relate to their present beliefs about teaching adults. It was the purpose of this qualitative study involving 16 practising adult educators to under…
Rising to the occasion: Publishing diversity-focused scholarship in adult education
Publication of diversity-focused scholarship has increased over the last decade, yet marginalized groups are still inadequately represented in academic journals. In addition, research about diversity has become increasingly complex and its definition varies greatly. This poses obstacles for the emerging scholar interested in submitting diversity-focused scholarship to academic journals. A rarely investigated resource that offers insight into this…
Stereotype Threat Reduction and Wise Schooling: Towards the Successful Socialization of African American Doctoral Students in Education
Efforts to increase minority representation in education faculty have generated changes in a number of departments of higher education. These changes, however, have lacked a unifying conceptual framework to either guide reform or measure outcomes. This article proposes stereotype threat and its antidote-wise schooling practices-as a conceptual framework to clarify and consolidate attempts to protect, nurture, and sustain the intellectual lives of…
A Primer on Critical Race Theory
Toward a Coherent Theory of Race in the Education of School Leaders: Fly fishing across the racial divide
The preparation of school leaders in an increasingly diverse country such as the USA has been hampered by the use of racial theories that are contradictory, disingenuous, or both. Educational researchers typically treat race as an objective and biological reality with explanatory powers; conversely, many teachers and principals have adopted the color‐blind perspective and insist that they do not see race. Using fly fishing as a metaphor, the auth…

Edward Taylor's Poetry
THE world of Edward Taylor's poetry is essentially a closed one, limited by the framework of Taylor's religious vision. As a Puritan clergyman Taylor was committed to a scheme of values, an outlook on the created universe, from which he could deviate very little. My purpose in this essay is to examine his poetry to determine how its structure and central imagery reflect major themes of his theological framework, and particularly to discover in wh…
The Poetical Works of Edward Taylor
From a 250 year-old manuscript come these selections from the work of America's first important poet, Edward Taylor of Massachusetts. He was regarded by Mark Van Doren as the writer of "the most interesting American verse before the 19th century." Originally published in 1966. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton U…

N 1689 a London publisher issued a small 56-page volume from the pen of Cotton Mather, entitled Right Thoughts in Sad Hours. One of Mather's earliest publications, it was a sermon delivered at Charlestown, as the dedication to Samuel Sewall indicates, under Afflicting impressions from the sudden Death of an Child. This is the clue by which to identify the child whose death was solemnized. Sewall's Diary, which records (1, 309) that he gave Mather…
