William Julius Wilson, Amy Shapiro et al.•BOOK•Color - Class - Identity•2012

The problems of the truly disadvantaged may require nonracial solutions such as full employment, balanced economic growth, and manpower training and education. Since national opinion polls consistently reveal strong public support for efforts to enhance work in America, political support for a program of economic reform could be considerably stronger than many people presently assume. Racial discrimination is the most frequently invoked explanati…

  • Multiculturalism

James Arthur, John Arthur et al.•BOOK•The Oxford Handbook of Practical…•2009

Few ideas are as open to different interpretations these days, or as controversial, as multiculturalism. Like many other ‘isms’ — socialism, conservatism, fascism — multiculturalism is a political movement as well as a set of philosophical, social, and political ideas. Before looking at the range of positions associated with multiculturalism, this article first describes its historical origins and the social forces that came together to create it…

John Arthur philosophically addresses the problems of racism and the legacy of past racial discrimination in the United States. Offering a thorough analysis of the concepts of race and racism, Arthur also discusses racial equality, poverty and race, reparations and affirmative action, and merit in ways that cut across the usual political lines. A philosopher, former civil-rights plaintiff and professor at an historically black college in the Sout…

  • Catpund: A prehistoric house in Shetland

Open Access•Beverley Ballin-Smith, Torben Bjarke Ballin et al.•ARTICLE•Scottish archaeological internet…•2005

A prehistoric house was excavated in advance of industrial quarrying at Catpund, Shetland. Although little of the internal stratigraphy of the house remained beneath a modern cabbage enclosure (planticrub), the form of the house survived. The artefacts found in and around the house indicate the domestic activities which took place there, and the farming methods employed in the vicinity. A thorough analysis of the artefactual evidence suggests tha…

  • Brewing beer: Status, wealth and ceramic use alteration among the Gamo of south-western Ethiopia

    James Arthur, John Arthur•ARTICLE•World Archaeology•2003•Cited by: 65•References: 6

Ethnoarchaeological research among the Gamo people of south-western Ethiopia indicates that pottery vessels used for beer fermentation have characteristic interior surface attrition. The Gamo’s strict social hierarchy orchestrates who produces and consumes beer: ritual-sacrificer households are able to produce and consume more beer than non-ritual-sacrificer households and this pattern also was found in the ceramic inventories of the two types of…

  • Family Disruption, Violent Victimization and Protest Masculinity

    Open Access•Roy L Austin, John A Arthur et al.•ARTICLE•International Review of Victimology•1992•Cited by: 1•References: 11

Americans show great concern over the likely harmful effects of father-absent families on children, especially when families are black. Little or no concern is shown over step-families although these are expected to be the predominant family form by the year 2000. Our study finds the emphasis on female-based black households to be misplaced when violent victimization is the harm of interest. Data for 1973, 1976, 1980 and 1984 from national sample…

Capitalism is often defended by appeals to natural rights: only in a free market, it is said, are people protected from the illegitimate intrusions of others. Coercion, either to prevent exchanges or to redistribute wealth, violates people's rights. But much of the property people have acquired came not from their own effort or the efforts of those who gave them gifts, but instead was taken from nature. Thus the question I propose to discuss in t…
