Platt National Park, Oklahoma, was the smallest national park in the United States until it was combined with an adjacent, reservoir-centered recreation site in 1976 to form Chickasaw National Recreation Area. The Influence of Complex Systems Interactions on Barrier Island Dune Vegetation Pattern and Process
Studies of dune vegetation patterns have emphasized two structuring agents: local environmental gradients that shape the prominent zonation of coastal plant species, and disturbance patches initiated by overwash during coastal storms. Disturbance-Mediated Variation in Stand Structure between Varieties of Pinus clausa (Sand Pine)
Geographically mediated differences in exposure to disturbance agents that operate at different scales impose demographic contrasts between plant populations. We examined such effects on the stand-scale population structure of the two varieties of Pinus clausa (sand pine). Pinus clausa var. immuginata stands of the Florida panhandle exhibited reverse-J diameter and age structures, with ongoing stem recruitment and relatively high seedling and sap…

Diameter structure, age/diameter regressions, and stem dispersion patterns reveal spatial variability in lodgepole pine (Pinus contorla) forest structure and dynamics in Lassen Volcanic National Park, California (LVNP). The composition of breeding-bird communities, as represented by the relative importance of foraging guilds, is different for vegetation of differing structures. We identified seven vegetation types and the character of the bird community associated with each.
