  • What is the real number of Lyme disease cases in Canada

Open Access•Nicholas H Ogden, Céline Bouchard et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

The high level of consistency in data from human case and tick surveillance, and data on serological responses in dogs, suggests that a high degree of under-reporting in Canada is unlikely. We speculate that approximately one third of cases are reported in regions of emergence of Lyme disease, although prospective studies are needed to fully quantify under-reporting. In the meantime, surveillance continues to identify and track the ongoing emerge…

    Robert P Smith, Christopher Wise•ARTICLE•World Literature Today•2000

From the appearance of Bound to Violence in the late 1960s, Yambo Ouologuem has been one of Africa's most controversial writers. This book gathers together essays on Ouologuem from critics on three continents. Also included are recent interviews with the reclusive author

  • Teaching design for assembly using product disassembly

    Open Access•Robert P Smith•ARTICLE•IEEE Transactions on Education•1998

This paper describes an effective pedagogical approach to teaching design for assembly (DFA). DFA is a well-established technique for reducing the difficulty of assembling a product through identifying design changes. DFA has significant direct and indirect benefits to reducing the manufacturing cost of a product, improving its reliability and ease of service and simplifying the entire manufacturing system. The pedagogical approach described emph…

  • Diversity of tick species biting humans in an emerging area for Lyme disease

Robert P Smith, Eleanor H Lacombe et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1992•Cited by: 1•References: 29

BACKGROUND. Although most tick bites in humans in areas of the northeastern United States in which Lyme disease is highly endemic are due to Ixodes dammini, no study documents the frequency of I. dammini bites in low-prevalence or emerging areas for Lyme disease. Data on the proportion of tick bites in humans that are due to I. dammini in a region may have implications for public health policy and clinical management. METHODS. A statewide survey …

  • Canine seroprevalence and the distribution of Ixodes dammini in an area of emerging Lyme disease

Peter W Rand, Robert P Smith et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1991•Cited by: 2•References: 10

This study evaluates the relative usefulness of canine serosurveys to predict risk of exposure in an area of emerging Lyme disease by comparing the distribution of canine seroprevalence with that of vector ticks. From 16 veterinary clinics throughout the State of Maine, 828 canine sera were obtained during the heartworm-testing months of April and May 1989 and measured for anti-Borrelia antibodies by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. In the same…

  • Potential for Lyme disease in Maine

Robert P Smith, Peter W Rand et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1990•Cited by: 1•References: 12

A survey of deer brought to tagging stations at 24 sites in Main revealed the presence of the deer tick, Ixodes dammini, on 5.1 percent of deer. Ticks were found almost exclusively on deer from southwest coastal sites in the state. The potential for endemic Lyme disease in coastal Maine merits further study

  • Risk factors for endemic giardiasis

Christopher G Chute, Robert P Smith et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1987•Cited by: 3•References: 10

In a mail survey, 171 Hitchcock Clinic patients with giardiasis were compared with an age- and sex-matched control group of 684 clinic patients with respect to potential risk factors. Households with shallow well or surface water sources had an odds ratio (OR) for giardiasis of 2.1 (95% confidence interval (95%CI) 1.3-3.2) compared with households with drilled well or municipal water supply. Other observed risks include family member in day care …
