Phonological Working Memory and Sentence Production in School-Age Children with Typical Language, Dyslexia, and Comorbid Dyslexia and Developmental Language Disorder
Purpose Little is known about the relationship between sentence production and phonological working memory in school-age children. To fill this gap, we examined how strongly these constructs correlate. We also compared diagnostic groups’ working memory abilities to see if differences co-occurred with qualitative differences in their sentences. Method We conducted Bayesian analyses on data from seven- to nine-year-old children (n = 165 typical lan…
Linking physical climate risk with mandatory business risk disclosure requirements
Mandatory disclosure of physical climate risks to businesses is planned or being implemented in many countries. This raises the question, how viable is it to link increasing physical climate risk, expressed as extreme events, to an individual business. We demonstrate how the characteristics of increasing frequency, magnitude and duration of extreme events impact a hypothetical business supply chain using the analogy of a spider’s web, where an ex…
The Relationship Between Depressive Symptoms, eHealth Literacy, and Asthma Outcomes in the Context of a Mobile Health Intervention
OBJECTIVE: The ASTHMAXcel PRO mobile app provides asthma education and collects asthma outcome data. The objective of this study was to evaluate the associations between health/electronic health literacy (eHealth literacy) and depressive symptoms with app usage and clinical outcomes. METHODS: Adults with persistent asthma were recruited to use the app. Participants completed the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 to assess for depressive symptoms, As…
Phonological vulnerability for school-aged Spanish-English-speaking bilingual children
This study examined accuracy on syllable-final (coda) consonants in newly-learned English-like nonwords to determine whether school-aged bilingual children may be more vulnerable to making errors on English-only codas than their monolingual, English-speaking peers, even at a stage in development when phonological accuracy in productions of familiar words is high. Bilingual Spanish-English-speaking second-graders (age 7–9) with typical development…
Empirical Underidentification with the Bifactor Model: A Case Study
Bifactor models are commonly used to assess whether psychological and educational constructs underlie a set of measures. We consider empirical underidentification problems that are encountered when fitting particular types of bifactor models to certain types of data sets. The objective of the article was fourfold: (a) to allow readers to gain a better general understanding of issues surrounding empirical identification, (b) to offer insights into…
Relative Accuracy of Two Modified Parallel Analysis Methods that Use the Proper Reference Distribution
Parallel analysis (PA) assesses the number of factors in exploratory factor analysis. Traditionally PA compares the eigenvalues for a sample correlation matrix with the eigenvalues for correlation matrices for 100 comparison datasets generated such that the variables are independent, but this approach uses the wrong reference distribution. The proper reference distribution of eigenvalues assesses the kth factor based on comparison datasets with k…
Probation Practice and the New Penology: Practitioner Reflections. By John Deering (Farnham: Ashgate, 2011, 204pp. 55.00 hb) * * Offender Supervision: New Directions in Theory, Research and Practice. …
John Deering’s research monograph, Probation Practice and the New Penology: Practitioner Reflections, provides a fascinating and underexplored area of research that begins to bridge a much-needed chasm between debates about probation practice and contemporary criminological theory. Based on a series of 51 in-depth interviews with staff working across two different probation areas, this book explores their attitudes, perceptions and reflections of…
