  • Encountering Incongruity: On J. Z. Smith

    Open Access•Tyler Roberts•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Academy…•2019•References: 1

    J. Z. Smith’s work has been a staple in the “Theory and Method” courses I have taught at Grinnell College for nearly two decades. I have always been struck by how his writing grabs and energizes our undergraduates and how Smith himself becomes, on occasion, an object of fascination for them. One year, the Religious Studies majors decided to immortalize Smith with their annual t-shirt. On the front of the pink shirt were the words “Jay-Z?” and an …

  • From Secular Criticism to Critical Fidelity

    Tyler Roberts•ARTICLE•Political Theology•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Stathis Gourgouris has responded to the question "Is critique secular" with a decisive "yes" and has offered a passionate and sophisticated defense of this position in Lessons in Secular Criticism. Yet, his argument suffers from a simplistic opposition between the religious and the secular. If we are to think critically about criticism and about religion, we need to think beyond such oppositions and be open to learning from religious forms of cri…

  • Encountering Religion: Responsibility and Criticism After Secularism

    Tyler Roberts•BOOK•Encountering Religion•2013

This book encourages scholars to abandon the conceptual opposition between the “secular” and the “religious” to better understand how human beings actively and thoughtfully engage with their worlds and make meaning. It argues that the artificial distinction between a self-conscious and critical “academic study of religion” and an ideological and authoritarian “religion” only obscures the phenomenon. Instead, the book calls on intellectuals to app…

  • Between the Lines: Exceeding Historicism in the Study of Religion

    Tyler Roberts•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Academy…•2006•Cited by: 3•References: 9

“Always historicize”: Frederic Jameson’s imperative today exerts a powerful influence on the study of religion. It informs a wide range of methods and, perhaps more important, it shapes influential definitions of religion and religious subjectivity and agency. This article examines this influence and argues for the necessity of thinking the limits of historicism. Building on Robert Orsi’s efforts to identify a space for academic exploration in-be…

  • Contesting Spirit: Nietzsche, Affirmation, Religion

    Tyler T Roberts, Tyler Roberts•BOOK•Contesting Spirit•1998

Challenging the dominant scholarly consensus that Nietzshe is simply an enemy of religion, Tyler Roberts examines the place of religion in Nietzsche's thought and Nietzsche's thought as a site of religion. Roberts argues that Nietzsche's conceptualization and cultivation of an affirmative self require that we interrogate the ambiguiies that mark his criticisms of asceticism and mysticism. What emerges is a vision of Nietzsche's philosophy as the …
