Open Access•Godehard Brüntrup, Benedikt Paul Göcke et al.•BOOK•Panentheism and Panpsychism•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 8

Panpsychism has become a highly attractive position in the philosophy of mind. On panpsychism, both the physical and the mental are inseparable and fundamental features of reality. Panentheism has also become immensely popular in the philo-sophy of religion. Panentheism strives for a higher reconciliation of an atheistic pantheism, on which the universe itself is causa sui, and the ontological dualism of necessarily existing, eternal creator and …

  • The Recent ex Nihilo Debate and the Radical Contingency of God

    Philip Clayton•ARTICLE•Philosophy Theology and the…•2015

Opponents of creation 'from nothing' (ex nihilo) have recently clashed with defenders of this doctrine. Typically, the debate is construed as pitting supporters of the omnipotent God of traditional Christian theism against process theologians and others who emphasize the contingency of the divine experience. In the following pages, I argue for exactly the opposite conclusion. Those who wish to emphasize the radical contingency of God are better a…

  • Panentheism across the World's Traditions

Loriliai Biernacki, Philip Clayton•BOOK•Panentheism across the Worlds…•2013

This volume addresses panentheism, the idea that God, or the divine, is not simply a transcendent being doling out justice and retribution to the good and the wicked. One of the fundamental premises in this book is that panentheism, although first named in the 19th century is in fact not so new, not merely a modern Western invention. The book offers a multi-faceted vision of a concept before the concept takes on a proper name. Panentheism, argues…

Twelve scientists from diverse backgrounds and disciplines demonstrate that it is indeed possible for profound intellectuals to integrate the life of science with the life of faith. In honest and inspiring interviews, they describe the difficult though rewarding process of reconciling their faith with their science and reveal the ways in which the two spheres can not only coexist but also mutually enhance each other. Jane Goodall begins the conve…

  • Article Commentary: Science, meaning, and metaphysics: a tribute to Wolfhart Pannenberg

    Open Access•Philip Clayton•ARTICLE•Interdisciplinary Science Reviews•2003

When Pannenberg published Theology and the Philosophy of Science in German in 1973, there was no eld of study called ‘religion and science’. It is hard to remember that fact today, when religion–science discussion has become the academic specialisation, the daily bread and butter, for hundreds of scholars around the world. I well remember looking for a mentor in 1979 who specialised in questions of rationality and religious belief and who could g…

  • Religious Voices Count: The New Openness to Spiritual Questions in the Sciences

    Open Access•Philip Clayton•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Science Technology &…•1999

For most of this century, those in the sciences have been accustomed to view religion as an opponent. Recent years, however, have seen a cultural change of great significance. Not only have many scientists dropped their former hostility to questions of spirituality, but increasing numbers of religious persons are following scientific developments, speaking on ethical and social issues raised by technology, and modifying beliefs that conflict with…
