  • Fear, Fear of God, God-Fearers

Benedikt Hensel, Phillip Michael Lasater•EDITOR•BOOK•Fear, Fear of God, God-Fearers•2026

  • Legal Thinking and Notions of the Self

Phillip Michael Lasater•ARTICLE•Journal of Biblical Literature•2025

This article contributes to discussions about the history of the self in ancient Jewish contexts. Second Temple–period figures such as Philo of Alexandria expressed clear connections between legal thought and reflections on the self, but these connections were not innovations of the Second Temple period. They had roots already in earlier texts going back at least to the Pentateuch. I argue that, for several reasons, contemporary research can bene…

  • The Heart of Self Formation

    Open Access•Phillip Michael Lasater•ARTICLE•Dead Sea Discoveries•2021

This article discusses the “heart” as part of the terminology for selfhood in ancient Jewish literature. After discussing a couple of criticisms of studies of the self and showing how these criticisms fail to persuade, the paper examines a range of texts in the Hebrew Bible, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and beyond for conceptions of the moral self. Special attention is given to the legal S tradition in the Scrolls as a fruitful illustration of how the s…

  • Facets of Fear

    Phillip Michael Lasater•BOOK•Facets of Fear•2019

  • Facets of Fear

    Phillip Michael Lasater•BOOK•Facets of Fear•2019

The notion »fear of God(s)« is widespread in and beyond the Hebrew Bible. How was it understood and why did it make sense among ancient Jewish scribes to couple »fear« terminology with »God(s)« terminology? How was this notion applied, and what taxonomical challenges does it involve? Phillip Michael Lasater addresses such questions through philological, concept-historical, and exegetical analyses, responding to the history of research on the topi…

  • “The Emotions” in Biblical Anthropology? A Genealogy and Case Study with

    Open Access•Phillip Michael Lasater•ARTICLE•Harvard Theological Review•2017

In the late nineteenth century, the British writer Lewis Carroll published a nonsensical poem called The Hunting of the Snark in which an unlikely alliance hunts a fictional animal, which Carroll named the “snark.” Despite the alliance's intense search for the snark and their questions about how to describe and classify it (apparently, “a Boojum”), they do not find it. I want to suggest that any effort to locate “emotions” in the Hebrew Bible or …
